Maha stared at the beautiful purple kaftan she planned to wear over a silky black catsuit. Yeah. Cat suit. Not a cat costume. A suit -- tight black pants and matching, long-sleeved black shirt. But it was the kaftan she was concerned about. She wanted to look nice for the dinner tonight. A hostess has to look her best. Had she packed too much purple? The official colors of Zutara were blue and red but was she carrying the theme too far? Needing to hurry on deck and check on the stewed sea prunes Bato had insisted on, she donned the outfit and twirled her hair into an up-do of carefully planned sloppiness. Racing out of the room the door caught the back hem of the kaftan and she was nearly choked to death and knocked unconscious as she was jerked back against the unforgiving metal hatch. Opening the door carefully and extracting the hem she shook her head. "Maha, s.l.o.w. down." She told herself firmly. And with that she took off in a dead run for the upper deck.

Bagpipe had been walking toward the upper deck when she saw Maha almost choking, then sprinting away to the dinner. "Guess I'm not the only one excited for the dinner." She said to herself with a smile before following the path Maha took to the dinner.

Hearing a tap at the door, Chibi opened it and was surprised to find a copy of the itinerary and the delightfully wacky map tacked outside, along with a note saying "Don't forget the highlight dinner tonight! BPT" "Ack!" yelled Chibi, grabbing her head. "I'm not ready! What do I wear?! I was reading all day ~ I'm a mess! Auuugh!" Doors all down the corridor started opening, and people poked their heads out to locate the source of all the noise. Embarrassed, Chibi grabbed the papers and shut the door, hurrying to go take a shower and dig through her luggage for something suitable to wear. "I wonder what they'll be serving tonight," Chibi thought, turning on some music to calm her down. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000XWJWTK[for a sample of what Chibi's listening to, click the play button next to the title]

"No, seriously, I don't need to taste them. I'll take your word for it." Maha told Bato as he held a spoon toward her mouth. "Heh. Gotta check on the table settings."
Maha scurried away to fiddle with the outrageously expensive fire lilies that adorned each place setting. Maroon linen napkins folded in neat, elongated triangles and topped by ebony chopsticks lay on each rectangular plate.
"Cake!" She screamed inside her head.
She had forgotten about the cake.
A purple blur streaked by the other party-goers as they emerged in the opposite direction onto the deck.

Hearing all the commotion outside her room, Luthien sprang out of bed and realized she had almost missed dinner! Wiping the cobwebs of sleep from her eyes, she bolted out of bed, ran to the shower, then got herself all ready to head back out on the deck. She heard a jingle from Pecan's crate, and the little (but sturdy!) dog shook with all his might, from his ears (which made a flapping sound), down to his furry tailless butt. "Hey buddy, you ready for dinner?" Lu asked, and Pecan responded with a loud, sharp bark. "Guess so!" Lu remarked, then she opened up the doggie's crate and rushed outside, where she saw...
A purple bolt of lightning! "Was that... Maha?" Luthien wondered to herself. "Who knew she could run that quickly?"
Appearing on the deck, Luthien took a look at all the hard work Maha had gone to to set the tables. "Oh wow... fire lilies! I can't believe she found some!"
From behind her, Luthien heard a strong male voice ask a question. "Luthien! Would you like to try some?" Bato inquired, holding out a ladle of steaming food. "Uh... maybe later," Lu responded with all the politeness she could muster, "but right now I think Pecan needs to take a walk." Bato nodded his head and Lu scurried off, commenting to her pup, "Thanks buddy, I owe you one. But I'm not sure how I'm going to avoid the sea prunes all night!"

"Watch out! Coming through! Coming through!" Maha called inelegantly as two large, attractive firebenders followed her, balancing an enormous cake between them. "In honor of the Water Tribe!" Maha announced as the two amazing-looking soldiers set the cake gently on the food table and stepped away. "Who provided us with such excellent hot cocoa and the official Zutara dog!" There was a smattering -- a loud one -- of applause. "The cake part is red velvet..." She continued, wiggling her eyebrows. "...if ya know what I mean."

Chibi, still emotionally scarred from the red velvet cake scene in Steel Magnolias, was confused. "Er, no... no, I don't know what you mean, and I'd like to leave it that way." Catching sight of the fluttering purple kaftan, though, she thought she saw the hint of an idea dawn... "Oh! You mean like -- like -- ah- hah... " ;D Aunt Wu elbowed her in the ribs before Chibi could elaborate on the symbolic color scheme, and gave her a condescending smile, fluttering her purple-shadowed eyelids. Iroh, standing on the other side of Chibi and hoping to catch her attention, was instead distracted by the beauty of the older woman, and took her by the elbow off into a shadowy corner where they could chat. "I've been thinking," he said as they left. "Maybe you might like to do a demonstration tonight? Nothing too showy, maybe just some palm-reading..." Chibi was left by herself, coughing from the fortuneteller's unexpected blow to her solar plexus. From behind her, a velvety male voice said, "Oh no, that sounds like a terrible cough. I have just the thing for it..." Turning around, Chibi caught sight of a tall male figure before a huge ladle was shoved in her face, brimming with purple stewed sea prunes. "Care for some?" Hakoda asked, with just the slightest lift of one eyebrow. "Oh! Um, um... er, Hakoda, how nice to see you --- what are you wearing!!?" "Like it?" the older man purred. "Hue insisted. He said that since they were an illusion anyway, we might as well wear these... ;D We're going to have a show later tonight, too -- "The Full Bato," we call it." "Er, er... oh, really?" squeaked Chibi, momentarily distracted. Hakoda, seeing his chance, took advantage of the situation long enough to pop the ladle full of stewed sea-prunes into Chibi's gaping mouth and then pranced away, laughing. Chibi shook her head. "Man, if Katara catches him in that get-up, she's gonna... wel, I don't know what she's gonna do. But I'd hate to be him. Bet Sokka and Zuko slipped some cactus juice in his cocoa." Shaking her head and walking away, Chibi went to see who else had already arrived so they could start a good chat about Fire Nation politics, or maybe the Ba Sing Se theatre scene. Or, heaven forbid, the evening's entertainment...

SkyE, hearing his stomach growl as he awoke from a quick power nap, swung his feet over his modest looking bed, the covers hanging over the side of the bed as a result of his wild sleep habits. He stood up, did a quick stretch and scratch, he put some comfortable clothes on, not in the mood to dress to impress today. As he looked into his mirror, his stomach vehemently reminded him of its needs, and remembering hearing that today would have a grand dinner in place, he quickly finished his preparations and left his room, messed up bed and all, to the dinner room.

Maha dug into her roast duck and let her eyes roam over the party. Inexperienced at throwing dinner dances she had been so nervous she was afraid she wouldn't be hungry. But who can resist roast duck? Certainly not Iroh who was working on a whole bird of his own.
And she would deny this later but stewed sea prunes are a perfect accompaniment to roast duck. Who knew?
The sun was setting and the deck glowed in the last rays of the day. Before long the Iroh/Jee Experience would start warming up their instruments, Iroh would give a quick dance lesson and everyone would be 'tripping the light fantastic.' Of course there was always the Water Tribe warrior show to look forward to, but much like innocently hiring a belly dancer to entertain a CEO and finding out he's not at all amused by such things, a lot could go wrong. A lot.

Meanwhile, the Zutarian Hobo had started on her rounds of the cruise, delivering all sorts of homemade cookies from the safety of her janitor's cart.
"Who wants some fresh chocolate chip baked goods?" she called out from the top deck.

Luthien and Pecan plunked themselves down beside Maha and started digging into the roast duck. "This is fabulous!" Luthien raved, "How on earth did they make it so juicy and tasty?" She noticed Pecan licking his chops beside her, anxious for a bite of the duck, so Luthien made him sit politely, then gave him a big chunk of the sweet bird. Pecan gobbled it down without even chewing, smiled, then ambled over to Maha and licked his hostess' hand affectionately. Ever the smart pup, he knew who was responsible for this amazing party!
"Hmm..." Luthien mused, through bites of duck. "You know, these sea prunes aren't all that bad. Texture's a little weird, but I could see this being an acquired taste." Luthien could have sworn she saw Maha nod her head a bit. "So Maha, what's this about the after-dinner entertainment? I know the Iroh/Jee experience is going to perform, but there's some buzz around the ship about something called 'The Full Bato.' Know anything about that?"

Maha choked on a prune. Every time she heard the name of the Water Tribe warriors' show she got a blush that went from her scalp to her toes.
"Yeah." She replied. "They've been working on it for a while and they're very ... um ... excited about it."
She took a delicate sip of tea and glanced over at Iroh to see if he approved. He was staring at Chibi.
"Um, lu I have to confess something." Maha began shakily. "I kind of ... well ... sort of ... locked Zuko and Katara in the brig together."

Lu laughed and patted Maha on the back. "'Bout time someone did something about those two! I approve wholeheartedly." Lu raised her cup of tea and offered a toast to Maha, "To Maha, a wellspring of great ideas that has yet to run dry!" Lu winked at Iroh, who seemed to know what was going on, and he winked back.
