I don't understand why they helped them cleaning the river. Aang, Toph and Katara were all using their bending. Err... 1 watertribe girl, 2 earthbenders (12y old boy, blind girl...) and a complaining guy... Claiming they're FN?? HELLO??? DISGUISE??
That's so... stupid???

Well, by that time Katara had already been outed as a Waterbender, so it seemed a little pointless to keep posing as 'colonials', right? Besides, I think I remember one of the Gaang asking the guy with multiple personalities not to give away any info that they were there, so I think the group is safe...for now.

But it makes a difference whether they know about Katara or about the whole gAang... It was already dangerous to reveal that Katara is a waterbender, but now they also know about Toph and Aang...

Which could maybe lead to more developed plot. Personally, if I ran a country, and out of the blue an important factory of mine was "mysteriously" destroyed I would investigate the possible causes. I wouldn't trust the spooked out factory leader's speculation of spirit-sabotage. The villagers know about the Gaang's identities, so the village might be further interrogated by a more competent FN officer . They were after all next to the factory. Perhaps someone *coughcough* Like the multi-personalities guy** betrayed their identity....

^^My feeling is that these people knowing about the Gaang will be a major plot point later on. Just like the kids in The Headband. The Gaang is going to continue travelling around the Fire Nation, helping people and spreading hope and freedom. Then guess who's going to come to their aid in the final showdown??? There is a reason for these "filler" episodes -- they set up future events.

The Painted Lady
Known for her gentleness and healing abilities, the Painted Lady is a powerful and benevolent spirit who watched over the river town of Jang Hui, until a Fire Nation factory moved in ten years ago and began polluting the river. It was this event that drove the Painted Lady away, leaving the villagers to fend for themselves. As is the case with many other spirits, only spiritually enlightened people can see the Painted Lady. Once Katara helps the villagers of Jang Hui to drive away the Fire Nation and clean the river, the Painted Lady reveals herself to Katara and thanks her.
She is like the river spirit from Spirited Away!
Purple Berries
These delicious, sweet, succulent berries are found throughout the Fire Nation. They aren't poisonous, but they will turn your tongue purple.
So apparently the berries really were harmless... maybe Appa really was sick and his tongue actually was purple from the river water after the first night, and then Katara kept feeding him the purple berries afterwards to pretend that he was sick after she decided to become the Painted Lady.

I'm pretty sure Appa was never sick.

I also highly doubt Appa was sick.
Miyazaki does a lot of work from Mythology, as does Avatar, so I imagine they will have a lot of similaties, though I do love my Miyazaki.

Look at him, does that seem healthy to you people? The ten ton flying bison with five stomaches is lying on side and breathing heavily. That isn't healthy or normal behavior from Appa. Don't even say he could be faking it because Katara later says "He may be sick of all the purple berries I've been feeding him but other than that he's fine."

Obviously you missed the nuances in Katara's line, as it's supposed to represent the fact that Appa might be tired of eating the purple berries to keep his tongue purple to convince the others that he's still sick. Of course, this is compounded by the fact that, with no explanations whatsoever, Appa is fine at the end and is having fun making scary growls. Appa was never sick.

Excuse me, but why didn't she just SAY so? Why couldn't Katara just tell us she told Appa to pretend to be sick? I can't believe how many people actually think Appa was faking being sick. Why is it so hard to believe that he was either truly sick to begin with and then Katara made him sick or Katara was always making Appa sick? She admitted to it! Katara isn't a flawless saint, she has done questionable things before (stealing) so why can't she make Appa sick so she can help the poor villagers? Katara didn't say: No, he's pretending to be sick because I asked. Katara said (this is word for word): He might be sick of the purple berries I've been feeding him but other than that he's fine. She didn't say it like: He might be "sick" of the purple berries I've been feeding him... And if Appa was faking his illness, then why did Katara bother to say such an ambiguous line? Why not just tell the truth, it would have been better to tell Aang his beloved Appa was not sick at all. Obviously you missed the nuances.

Good dialogue, you know, gotta have it. Do you honestly believe that Katara will risk making Appa, their only way of transport, actually sick? If you do, then this debate ends here. Actually, that's exactly how she said it, you just didn't see it. But then, that's nobody's fault but yours. Funny you didn't say anything about the FACT that Appa was 100% better by the end of the episode with no explanation whatsoever. How about you tackle that one before we move on to what nuances you missed.

I don't think stealing from thieves and/or evil corporations is questionable. And "sick of" means "tired of" if she said "he might of been sick FROM the purple berries I've been feeding him" you'd have a point "Sick of" automatically means "tired of" in all statements that are not said by a ****ing 1st grader.

She's still stealing and destroying and was not at all reprimanded for it, just for stalling the schedule; what kind of message is that for kids: So long as you steal from bad people and destroy things that belong to bad people then destroying and stealing is good? And again, why not just say out right that Katara asked Appa to fake he was sick? Katara didn't say "sick of" like it was a term, she said: He might be sick- of the purple berries... There was no indication of "sick of" being meant to be "tired of".
