The Real issue on this subject is being forgotten. The fact that the GOP have used this event to draw attention away from the fact that they vetoed first respondent health care benefits to the Ground Zero Workers.
Otherwise, isn't this what the terrorists want? It shows that our country has given into fear. Fear from terrorists and fear from Muslims even though there are 1.2 billion Muslims and approximately under 10,000 members of Al Qaeda

Seriously? This is what it's come down to? I thought 08 illustrated the point well enough - he doesn't condone terrorists, but can see things from their perspective. Why continue to badger him when he's answered your question more than sufficiently? Relax. I just asked a question seeking the bottom line. If he's already answered me "more than sufficiently", it should be easy to do it again. It's up to him, though, if he wants to answer. Luthien is right. I have given my answer and I feel that it's more than sufficient. The fact that you seem to be pressing this litmus test of sorts is highly disconcerting to me. I already feel like a persona non grata in my own country as it is and I'm just a run-of-the-mill white, upper-middle class, Christian-raised liberal male. I'm sure, were it not for the penultimate descriptor, my mind wouldn't be as troubled as it is now (if at all). Then again, given how insane the public discourse is currently, I doubt it. And, as such, I am withdrawing from this discussion. No hard feelings; I just can't take it anymore.

My take on the Ground Zero mosque is that just because you have the right to do something doesn't make it the right thing to do. September 11, 2001 isn't that far in the past, and plenty of people are still grieving. Even though most Muslims oppose terrorism, it can't be ignored that the attacks were committed in the name of Islam. However peaceful the intentions of the mosque may be, the location is going to strike a chord for many. There were a group of Carmelite nuns who build a convent on the site of Auschwitz. Even though they had good intentions, even the Pope eventually asked them to move. They weren't bad people, but the location was innapropriate, especially because of the great tragedy that happened there. Is there freedom of religion in this country? Absolutely, and people have the right to build a mosque wherever they want to. However, I feel like if they want to truly respect the families of the 9-11 victims, then they would pick a different site for the mosque.

It was a similar situation of a religious group building a place of worship on a sensitive site where a great tragedy happened.

I don't believe there's direct correlation in the sense of a mosque near the site where radical Muslims committed an act of terrorism in regards to the nuns and Auschwitz.
If that makes sense.
I do have to agree I'm somewhat perplexed as to why nuns wanted to build a convent near Auschwitz myself .

Everyone knows they're not building a MOSQUE right??? They're building an Islamic community center quite a few blocks from where the towers once stood.

Yes, a Civic center with prayer/worship room and wordly amenities... And, until they build something really tall on the WTC site, they won't have a view either...

Yes your both right this whole thing is completley ridiculous. There are more important things going on, this wouldn't have been a big deal if it wasn't an election year.

Actually, I disagree with this. I think it has become a bigger issue because of the election, BUT I don't think that if this hadn't been an election year, it would have just rolled through with no attention on it. That's just my opinion, but I'm pretty sure a lot of figures (specifically the ones on FOX) would have drawn major attention/focus to it.

My view is that its a visible focal point for a lot of simmering global issues that will continue to draw the worlds attention for the forseeable future.

I really hope your wrong about that. the last thing we need right now is for America to look xenophobic towards Muslims.

isn't an ideological group faith based? not to take away from your argument though. On the west bank thing in the past year and a half my view on the situation has changed greatly and while this is nice until the Israeli government becomes responsible for settlers actions I have no faith in the State of Israel.
