What happens to her? Will she stick with Azula against Zuko? Will she try to find him? Will Azula get to the note first and never share it with her? Will they just set her aside for the majority of the rest of the season? Will she sabotage Azula to save Zuko?
So many questions. I fear they'll just set her aside for the time being though. They've certainly done that with Ty Lee.

I say she'll feel hurt that Zuko didn't care enough to bring her along. On a side, what note are you talking about?

He left it on a bed or a cushion and I thought it was for her because he said "I'm sorry Mai" when he set it down. I can't think of anyone else he would be writing a note to since he was going to talk to his father personally and I can't see him bothering to write a note to Azula. The Mai issue makes me very curious. It seems like her reaction should be important to the story.

Oh, THAT NOTE...I completely missed that scene. I was too busy gushing about how awesome everything is.^_^; Maybe this'll lead to that scene with Mai standing and Zuko sitting down looking all sullen. Now if only I had a screenshot of it...

I don't see her as angry that Zuko left or running to his side...she will most likely being sad because of him leaving and sad that he is once again a fugitive from the Fire Nation.

She'll understand why he did it, and be apathetic (like always)
I saw a theory somewhere (probably in the DoBS discussion) about Azula not needing Mai or Ty Lee anymore, having studied and perfected their techniques. I thought about it, and agree (Azula was doing Ty Lee style acrobatics while escaping, and was planning on throwing a shuriken at Sokka, before Toph stopped her). When Azula doesn't need someone anymore their life is often at risk. If the theory is true then Mai will figure it out, and then she and Ty Lee would leave Azula to join Zuko and the GAang.

Well, he really does put her in a difficult position by doing this. She probably would have left with him if he'd asked her, but not out of any great moral position, only to be with him.
But by leaving her there he virtually guarantees that she'll have to continue to work with Azula against him. I think she'll do something to help him once he's captured (if that's indeed what that sketch from comicon shows) and then possibly go with him or ... something bad might happen to her ...
It depends a lot on what's in the note, but again, if it's all lovey-dovey 'wait for me' stuff he's really messing her up. For her sake he should make her hate him so she's not conflicted (and therefore in danger) about what he's pretty much forcing her to do.

I'm of the impression that it really does depend on the note.
Zuko looked like he put quite a bit of thought into what he was saying. Normally, he acts without much consideration, but the articulate way with which he wrote the note states that he really did take Mai's feelings into account.
Will she ever get the chance to read the note? I'm sure we'll find out -- for now, pure speculation.
For the first scenario, I'm assuming she does read it.
Following up on Zuko's uncharacteristic thoughtfulness, what if he had the foresight to jeopardize his sister? What if, in the note, he stated his main reason for leaving was because of Azula? Mai certainly wouldn't look at Azula the same, perhaps choosing to defect as well. Zuko's honesty would come into question, as we don't know how much -- or how little -- Azula affected his decision to leave. She probably played some role -- but, at this point in time, nothing is etched in stone. This is Azula we're talking about, though... so, it can't be ruled out.
If Zuko played it right, he could have systematically turned two people against his little sister: Ozai and Mai. What a fitting present to leave her! She's always screwing up his plans. A damaging dose of her own medicine, to be sure. Mai's eventual defection has been hinted at several times prior, and this could be the straw to break the camel's back.
Another possibility... what if Ty Lee sees the note first? Being a good friend, she'd likely run off and tell Mai immediately. Sure, it would hurt, and Ty Lee would know that... but, in the same token, she doesn't seem like the type to hide things. Mai would find out eventually... better to be told by a friend who will stand by her in her time of despair, than be left to deal with it alone.
This would be a nice way to re-introduce Ty Lee back into the show, since she seems to've dropped off the face of the earth...
Mai and Ty Lee will likely stick together, come what may. If Mai defects, Ty Lee will follow. Maybe not right away... but they'd meet up again at some point. They're clearly a duo. Barring something extreme and totally out of left field, their friendship will hold up.

I still say Azula's going to use Zuko's defection as a means to turn Mai against him...
...or maybe that's just hope talking...

I still say Azula's going to use Zuko's defection as a means to turn Mai against him... I'm sure Azula will try. But I'm also sure Azula will not succeed. It would be interesting to see Mai choosing Azula over Zuko [during Season 2, I thought it was a sure thing], but given how Season 3 went, Mai's going to turn against Azula. But I still think it was stupid of Zuko to leave Mai in the Fire Nation, home ground of Azula and Ozai. Bait, means of manipulation, tool for blackmail--he's just asking for the villains to use his girlfriend against him. He was awesome in "The Eclipse", but he's still a really bad planner. [He needs to learn from Sokka. And then they can bond. And it will be hilarious.]

I am not surprised that Zuko left Mai, he probably thought it would be the safest place for her. He is seen as a traitor now, she still comes from an influential family, she probably won't be considered a traitor. Besides Zuko has no idea how the GAang will react towards him. He has no real idea where he will be going. I believe Mai will manage somehow. And I agree, in what light she will see Zuko depends a lot on that note. I think she'll at first stick with Azula, but if it comes to a hand-to-hand fight with Zuko, I'm not that sure..

If Zuko thought it was safer for her to be left behind he doesn't understand how much she cares about him or he's a bigger fool than we thought. She is one of Azula's sidekicks and that hasn't changed. Now he's defected and he's left her behind. He took away her choice in a sense. Very selfish. If he'd asked her she would have left with him. She'd have complained a lot because there's a good chance he's back to sleeping in the dirt and she's never known anything but luxury, but she'd have gone with him. But now she's in the position of most likely being asked to choose between Zuko (probably imprisonment or banishment without a link to him) or Azula (working to hurt Zuko). If she chooses Azula with the intention of working from the inside to keep him from harm she really risks her life -- but I could see that potentially happening within the story -- I just don't think it would end well for her. I'm no Maiko or Mai fan but I certainly don't want any characters to get hurt. I think that might be the only thing left for her though. She's in a no-win situation and he put her there. I honestly can't think of a single thing she could do for a positive outcome for herself. I fear they won't deal with her situation at all because they haven't dealt well with anything concerning her. They may just be putting her away for the time being and Azula will go off without either Mai *or* Ty Lee (who is pretty much off the show as far as I can see ) and we'll just forget about them until they inexplicably show up at the end, no worse for wear, and Zuko marries Mai and all live happily ever after. I hope I'm wrong.

I think She'll be hurt and upset. Azula will probably interrogate Mai, since she was his girlfriend, and out of loyalty for Zuko, she won't tell Azula about the note. Then I think either Azula or Ozai will hold Mai as bait.
