I still say Azula's going to use Zuko's defection as a means to turn Mai against him... Yes, please be the answer... pretty please?... Me too... V_V

Maybe sometime in the show, Mai might join the gaang to help them in their fight in the final battle. Perhaps that scene in the headband - where Mai gives an angry look at Azula when she was leaving Zuko to deal with Ty Lee's pigtails - foreshadows her going against Azula. So perhaps Mai might join the gaang later. That would be awesome! I'd like to see how she would interact with the gaang. It would be even cooler if Ty Lee joins her too!

Zuko has cast Azula in a bad light in her father’s eyes. His passionate speech has ticked his dad off beyond belief. Iroh is gone, so they cannot take it out on him. Ursa is banished, so she is out of reach. Revenge . . .
Mai is really in a bad situation. At least, she would be if I were Ozai or Azula. If I were an evil mastermind, I would destroy everything that Zuko holds dear. I think it is in her best interest to turn her back on Zuko with them. She could pretend to turn on him or really do so.
Now if she is, in fact, ticked at Zuko and wants revenge, then she could be used to break him. That picture of Zuko and Mai in that cell looks anything but romantic. Looks can be deceiving, though.

I would say that Mai would be hurt also. But if think about it I am not so sure that she really agrees with what Azula and her father are doing is right. I think in a way Zuko got to her not so sure that if Mai would go find Zuko and join him with the avatar. Although not so sure she will stay and fight on Azula's side. She did not really want to go with Azula in the first place if remember the earlier episodes right. But Azula in manipulant ways convinced her, this goes same for Ty Lee, who would have rather stayed with the circus.

^Azula "convinced" (more like scared) Ty Lee to join her. Mai just went with Azula cause she was bored.

V_V We must light candles and sacrifice chickens...pray to the gods that our desires are fulfilled... Truthfully...I think it could go either way...it all depends how ticked off Mai gets...and how convincing Azula is...

I'd say that there will be a big fight scene between Zuko and Mai, where throughout the whole thing Zuko; while trying to defend himself without hurting her will be trying to also convince her what Azula really is.

^if that happens and they do those "I've pinned you down and you can do nothing so you listen to me now" thing I'll start laughing but then that would be nice dramatics though I'd wish for Azula to come in sometime soon to stop the Maikoness if that scene happened. I'm hoping for Ty Lee to come back, her character needs to be resolved too you know.

I'd say that there will be a big fight scene between Zuko and Mai, where throughout the whole thing Zuko; while trying to defend himself without hurting her will be trying to also convince her what Azula really is. I think Mai knows exactly who Azula is. She just doesn't care (at least she didn't in season 2 -- in season 3 she's had more different personalities than Koh has faces). The only thing that will turn her is if Zuko's threatened and I think that's what will happen. Although Azula could also use the threat against Zuko to keep Mai in line. That's why I see her trying to help him from the 'inside', which poses the most danger to her personally. @voc: I would cringe so hard at that scene my face would freeze like that. One thing that I'd hate to see scenewise is a replay of the Tom-Tom scene where she willingly gave him over to potentially violent rebels (she didn't know it was Aang) with Zuko now as the sacrifice. She would protect Zuko where she didn't protect her baby brother. Now the saddest thing is I think they'd see that as a Mai positive (as if somehow she's changed!) and I would see that as more a character negative than anything (she sticks up for her boyfriend but not for a baby?). Hopefully they won't do that. But like I said before I can't think of a single Mai storyline that can end positively for her as a character (meaning she's in a no-win situation) or satisfyingly for the audience. Except maybe a Mai/Ty Lee take-down of Azula -- but what would bring that about I have no idea.

Given the choice, Mai would likely side with Zuko, as a critical decision seems to be the path she's had thrust upon her. I have something of a hot-and-cold relationship with Maiko, so I feel I can distance myself enough to look at the situation in neutral terms, using context clues from the show. Again, my findings are not a result of a push for Maiko. Rather, they were conclusions drawn even before the 'ship was confirmed, supported by recent events in Season Three. The fact that Mai and Zuko are a couple is helpful to my stance, of course! Let's break it down. Mai's relationship with Azula: not so stellar. There's evidence of psychological distress as a result of bullying, care of Azula. While it's been revealed that Mai's reservation and apathy primarily stems from the pressure to conform imposed on her by her parents, one could strongly argue that she learned to "shut off" her feelings as a defense mechanism to cope with Azula's merciless taunting. Let's not forget: the main reason Mai joined Azula in the first place was out of boredom. Not a very compelling argument for her supposed loyalty. Most recently, and perhaps most strikingly, there's this scene. I'm not convinced this was a mere look of disapproval -- listen to the "whoosh" in the background as Mai walks past Azula. That particular sound-effect is indicative of a bad omen or negative foreshadowing. Often overlooked is the shot of apparent distrust Azula fixates on her retreating form. Mai is geared to betray Azula, and soon. Now, let's look at her relationship with Zuko: much better. Childhood crush; rekindled romance. I don't need to delve too much into it, because we've all seen it for ourselves. Perceptions may differ, but it's pretty clear that the two are meant to be a couple. The only way I could see Mai sticking with Azula... is out of coercion. Coercion is a bad thing; it means Azula would have to force Mai's obedience. Likely, this would be done in a way consistent with the Fire Princess, which means plenty of cruelty and heartless mind-games. If this is Mai's fate, what a shame. She's probably better off fleeing the Fire Nation than sticking around to incur Azula's manipulations -- and possible wrath. The creators have stressed the importance of Mai's relationship with Zuko far more than her dealings with Azula, and I think there's a reason for that. There's little room for doubt: Mai feels closer to the Prince than the Princess. An eventual defection is all but assured.

Mai is always bored and depressed (or for most of season 1 & 2 and part of 3) but when Zuko returned to the Fire nation. Zuko got to her and she still seamed to be somewhat bored with life but not quite as depressed as was before. I think she really cares for Zuko and if it means defending Zuko and getting shot with lightning from Azula she will.

^as of right now I just feel sorry for Mai cause Zuko has put her into a dilema with the two options being rather dismal.
@mahatista: yes, they shouldn't do that. that's just teaching the wrong message to people. stick up for your bf and not your BABY brother? No.
Now, the question is: Which descision is the lesser of two evils?
