Can you believe that they are cutting baseball and softball as an event! The IOC might add skateboarding as a discipline sport. My favorite events are freestyle wrestling and soccer along with selective track and field events.

Odd... and interesting. That sounds cool ~ Olympic skateboarding. I guess Olympic DDR is next. Hey, you never know. I always enjoy the Olympics, but as the most interesting aspects to me this time around are political and social, I can't really comment on that in the Sports board. So is there anyone in particular y'all are watching for?

I think some stuff in the Olympics is stupid. Skateboarding? Nope, doesn't belong. They'll probably put it in there though, I mean when dancing with ribbons, trampolining, and badmitton (sp?) are in it
I'm watching for Misty May and Kerri Walsh for womens beach volleyball, and Karch Kiraly for mens beach volleyball.

I think that skateboarding should count as a sport and not an activity. You have to use your muscles and mind to concentrate.

They prolly eliminated baseball because the World Baseball Classic suits the international event.

Baseball is not as international as we would like it...it is growing, but far from being Omni-present...
but 2010 should be Winter Olympics if my math is not failing me...

Gran Gran: yes the next olimpics are the bejing olimpics in 2008, the winter olimpics are in 2010. Sandy, Empress of Owls: I'm sorry why did you mention badminton? badminton is one of the most demanding sports out there. It might not look like it. But the camping badminton everyone plays doesn't qualify as a good reference. The top notch and professional badminton is up there in the top 10 perhaps even top 5 as most harsh and most physically demanding sports. I think badminton should be considered as an Olympic sport.

Why not? I think skateboarding should be considered a sport. There's nothing wrong with it that says it can't be one. But I don't think they're sticking it in though I think you mean Rhythmic Gymnastics. I actually love that. I had a friend that trained in Aerobic Gymnastics. The whole sport and it's subcategories requires physical strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, gracefulness, and kinesthetic awareness. I wish I trained in this or ballet. I have the flexibilty and balance for it, after years of dancing(which my mom forced me to do and which I finally dropped after turning 14 hehe)

I know that China has been trying to get Wushu as an event. Honestly i think that's a big mistake, since there's no combat involved all it is a bunch of set routines. Unfortunately, unlike gymnastics or figure skating there is no room for interpretations/variations (floor performance). It would be lots of people doing the same thing over and over again. But since there's no measurement to see who's the best, it becomes a subjective winner.

and gymnastics isn't subjective? With everybody doing something else... at least when everybody does the same, you can compare it. I think they should get their native sport included, if only as demo. I believe that's how Baseball and Softball got included...Korea got TaeKwonDo...Why not Wushu...

attonbitus: yeah that's the problem with a lot of subjective sports, like Ice Skating for example. But that shouldn't de-credit them. These are athletes that train like crazy hard and love what they do. But it stinks that people must judge who's better than the rest, because that's an invalid way to determine skill from performance from ability and etc. Wushu, really? Wow that would be interesting to see, but yeah they don't follow a combat style of fighting, it would be more of routine sort of thing. All well, we'll see. BTW that martial art IFTW. Gran Gran: No I think he was saying that it is, because it most definitely is a subjective sport. Esp. Rhythmic and Acrobatic Gym.

Anything where the tape and stopwatch doesn't decide the outcome is. Doesn't make it bad - if the judges are on the level...

I really like watching diving and can't wait for the Olympics in Beijing. Tennis and Gymnastics are fun to watch as well.

Still am. Baseball at least has the professional league, but now what do softball players have to look forward to? Nothing. *bitter*
