He had nothing to do with the plot. He may as well have been a random extra. People should stop looking for minor unimportant details to get an ep out of filler status. The only episode that I think has escaped being a filler due to a later episode is "Jet." Who cares if an episode is a filler or not? What matters is what level of satisfaction you get from watching an episode. That's what sets episodes like Jet and The Fortuneteller apart from the likes of The King of Omashu, Avatar Day, The Painted Lady, etc.

I know that. It annoys me though when people argue that something isnt a filler because of some omg minor detail that comes up again two seasons later. Or even worse "fillers dont exist because of character development lolololol"
Some of my favorite episodes are arguably fillers.

I liked book 3, 'coz 2 of my top 3 favorite eps. were there... 307 and 308 to be exact, since Toph rocks, and Hama is the coolest character in the show. ~Toph~

Or even worse "fillers dont exist because of character development lolololol" Some of my favorite episodes are arguably fillers. I feel you on this. The nice thing about "fillers" is that they generally show how the characters act when they're not under pressure. It's kind of refreshing. I'm not saying, however, that I like all fillers more than the rest. A good show requires balance, but with considerably more plot-tuned episodes. That's one of the things I like about Avatar. But I digress. Book 3 is my favorite, because we know the characters and we see exactly how awesome they are. Like the extent of Azula's evil megalomania in "The Beach," Toph's lock-picking skills in "The Puppetmaster" or Aang's halucinations in NAD.

I've been holding off on my vote...waiting for book three to hit its stride...but it's over two-thirds into it and, for me at least, it still hasn't. Guess I'm going to have to go with book two...

Oh my gosh!! Man I just rewatched several episodes from the season two again, and I forgot how much I loved avatar. Definitely the best season in my opinion. It has so much deep message to it, and it touches on eastern philsophy and concepts, oh yeah, therewas IROH!!
I mean the only two bad episodes was avatar-state and avatar-day. All of the other episodes were great.
Like nandi, I too am waiting for the rest of season 3 to make up my decision, but for now season two is the best. Season three hasn't all been that AMAZING, granted I watched most of them on the PC so the WOW factor kind of died there. But, I felt it could have been better, less Maiko drama, no Combustion man (he was utterly useless, he had a like total of 10 minutes airtime, I was hoping he be the Zhao of season 3, and really didn't do anything to progress the story. Zuko could have appoarch the gaang a different way), and no Iroh...sob**
I'm going to watch all of season three again on tv, once it reairs, to see if the experience will be different.

I liked how the second half of season 2 was really intense and continuous. Season 1 was really disjointed and Season 3 a little less, but the end of S2 was like one epic episode. I liked individual episodes in the other seasons, but S2 felt more like one story. I think that's what got me hooked.

So far I loved all of season 3 but season two was good too. I'm not sure which I prefer. But season two did have more of a excitement factor to it.

I loved loved loved season one. Such a great way to start out Avatar, but season two followed up just as exceptionally, and then season 3 is amazing. So I, naturally picked season one, as it started it all.

So far, Season Two appeals to me the most. Even though Season One was more colorful in my opinion (so many characters and places) the action didn't begin until Season Two, when things started falling into place and getting interesting. Season Two was when Toph and Azula were fully introduced, and they play huge parts in the episodes that follow. We also got to see Zuko in another light, instead of being angry all the time in Season One and majorly conflicted in Season Three. I prefer this season because it's when so many crucial storylines were introduced and when the battles were better- after all, seeing Aang fight against Azula > The Gaang against pirates, in my opinion! If I wanted a season that didn't really drag on, I'd pick this one simply because almost every episode contributed to the storyline.

Ah, so it looks like it might be time to revive this old thread again! In light of everything, I liked Book 3 for all the advancements in plot, but I would still give my vote for my fav book to Book 2: Earth. I just really loved the amount of cohesion the episodes shared with each other.
Book 1 and Book 3 were a little fragmented in that the episodes were more standalone and were set in many different locations with different characters, but for me the Book 2 episodes had such a great flow from one episode to the next, with a logical and organic feel to it. Book 2 didn't feel as rushed as Book 3 did at some times, and so overall I give Book 2 my vote.
