This thread is made in relation to this thread that was made a little while back: distanthorizons.proboards31.com/index.cgi?board=avgeneral&action=display&thread=1191643208Now that it's December, Japan has already aired the first few episodes of the show. According to one Japanese blogger, he/she thought the show was cool. He/she loved the comedy, the story, the characters, the voice actors, the animation, and above all...Katara! ^_^ "Avatar: The Legend of Aang" airs every Saturday at 8:25 p.m. and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. on channel 751. If you go to Nick's Avatar page (and even on Nick's main page), you can see the trailer which you can kind of hear the Japanese VAs a little. Whoever Nick picked, I think the kid seems fitting when he shouts "penhito!!" (penguin!!). Nick's Avatar site: www.nickjapan.com/programs/avatar/index.htmlI've yet to see any clips of the Japanese Avatar. I'm already seeing a lot of Japanese fan art from fans who've been keeping track of the English version. *sighs*

That trailer was really really funny. It was just funny how the narrator said "Avatar." Did you see them refer to Aang as Ung? It is really funny in Japanese.

Actually, they pronounce his name as "Aan". Japanese don't have "g" in their alphabet. a o i e u ka ko ki ke ku ha ho..etc. ^_^

I translated that block of Japanese text that's below the Japanese Avatar trailer into English on Babel Fish, and this is what I got:
That former times, it had consisted in four countries of the water, the earth, the fire and the air. The vendor which has the ability to work the respective skill of the water, the earth, the fire and the air (the user) existed in each country, in their vendors, the only person who can manage four skills entirely was called ' ƒAƒoƒ^[ ' with. Order of the world was maintained by ƒAƒoƒ^[, the people had lived in peace. But, after the kingdom of the fire attacking other country, order of the world deteriorated. Just ƒAƒoƒ^[ can recover world peace, but the succession person of ƒAƒoƒ^[ was the boy of 12 years old where it passes un. Furthermore, he only skill "of the air" you had mastered yet....
Looking at it in English (mostly, anyway; doesn't seem like Japanese has a word for "Avatar"), it looks rather...broken, I think.

Just a matter of time before Avatar is shown in Korean....
I mean, it's animated there for goodness sake!!! I wanna talk about it with my cousins... it'll give us something in common.
It'll be "Abatah."
And Katara will call Sokka "Oppa."
And it'll be weird, since "Appa" means "dad" in Korean. That's kinda what caught my attention. Ya think they did it on purpose?

The literal translation of the title is "Avatar: Legend of the Boy Aang."
And yeah, it's technically Abataa in Japanese as well (they don't have the V sound). And Babelfish has no idea how to translate アバター.
Japanese does actually have the g- sound, but it's only in "ga gi gu ge go" form. So a rapid stop like in "Aang" would be impossible, it would come out as Aangu. That comes out as two syllables, which would make it a nightmare for lip synching, so that's why they likely went with Aan.
I'm not perfect with Japanese, but I think that's likely the reasoning.

Hmm... this is ridiculous to point out, but they kept the English VAs during the penguin sledding part (when Aang and Katara are laughing).
...anyone else notice that?

Looking at it in English (mostly, anyway; doesn't seem like Japanese has a word for "Avatar"), it looks rather...broken, I think. As helvetica beated me to the answer.... "Avatar" is in that summary (and everywhere else in the page). It's pronounced "Abataa" in kana. Babelfish is definitely not the best site for any accurate translation regardless of the language. Hmm... this is ridiculous to point out, but they kept the English VAs during the penguin sledding part (when Aang and Katara are laughing). ...anyone else notice that? I know some shows do that when dubbing. Like, they leave the actual language intact. The Japanese probably felt that it wasn't necessary to re-dub laughing. ^_^ Just a matter of time before Avatar is shown in Korean.... And it'll be weird, since "Appa" means "dad" in Korean. That's kinda what caught my attention. Ya think they did it on purpose? When is it going to air in Korea? And that would be interesting... Aang: Dad yip yip!! Sokka: ?.. Aang, are you okay? You just called Appa, "dad". Aang: I did? I don't even have a dad. Sokka: .... Nevermind. -_-; I'm only guessing it's "Appa" because M&B consulted one of their animators for a name for Appa. So, they came up with "Appa". ^o^ Haha...

Also interesting is the picture in place before you press play on the video: the gAang standing on the Great Wall of China. It's not a publicity shot I've seen before. I think in Japan they're likely to try to play up the Chinese aspects of the show.

^ Well, for me, it's definitely a promo picture that we saw before. I forgot where exactly but it's an old promo picture. I notice though that they chose it for probably the most obvious reason.
Definitely think Japan will eat the show up because of their relationship with China. And China kind of defines what the Fire Nation is anyways. They may be super in economic but country wise. They have too many people and a lot of accidents every year. Plus, the only country in the world who's still fighting for a hold on territory that they claim as their own. Sheesh.

I thought the Fire Nation was more reminiscent of WWII era Japan, with the imperialism and world domination and stuff. But that's besides the point. I wonder if in Korean version of Avatar Aang will have to call Katara a nuna. Because she is like two years older than him. And I can't wait to see Korean voiced Jeong Jeong On and horyo, no offence but your sig is freaking me out

^ Yeah, I thought the Fire Nation was more of a WWII Japan Yeah, I'd love to see a Korean version, but what I'd REALLY like to see would be Avatar in Chinese. That way, my grandparents could watch it with me.

The literal translation of the title is "Avatar: Legend of the Boy Aang." I thought it was "Avatar: Legendary boy An". :/ I've seen a few pieces of Japanese (and Korean) Avatar fanart from back in September/October, but all of the fanartists have watched it in English though. I don't think it'll catch on much untill episode 11 or 13. Even then, it won't be on a large scale because apparently in Japan not everyone gets cable, and Nickelodeon JP is a cable station. I hope it does catch on though because then it might be brodcasted on a non-cable station. :> I hope someone puts an episode online. Aang sounds so cute. ^^
