I happened across this article from Variety: www.variety.com/article/VR1117984091.html?categoryid=13&cs=1&nid=2563There are three main points made in this article: 1) Paramount Studios will release the film while Nickelodeon Films produces it. Not surprising since both studios are owned by the same company and Paramount DVD has released each of the Avatar DVDs since day one. 2) The title of the first film will officially be The Last Airbender, dropping "Avatar" to avoid confusion with James Cameron's Avatar, which is due in 2009. 3) The proposed release date for The Last Airbender is July 2, 2010. This may change with various developments. More news to follow as it happens.

Bad title is bad. Damn it Cameron. Don't steal our titles. And while your at it, stop writing your own movies. Stick with directing. lulz
Miyazaki influence is a good thing though. Perhaps it means they'll be faithful to the asian feel of the show?

I agree the it lacks the impact without Avatar in the title. The last airbender just stinks as a epic movie title. Seriously The Last Airbender triology just doesn't have a nice ring to it. Oh well hopefully the movie script will at least refer to Aang as the Avatar.

I'm sure he'll be called the Avatar...it'd be like not calling Anakin the Chosen One...or Neo for that matter...
Sorry...had to go for the Star Wars reference...
It's done now...let's move on...

They will reference Aang as the Avatar. It's perfectly legal and, more importantly, integral to the storyline that he is. Seriously, do you know how many films there are where the main character is referenced as "The One" or "The Chosen One"? You don't see the Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix) and George Lucas (Star Wars) duking it out over those terms, do you?
I dunno, though. I think The Last Airbender works as a title. Granted, it would be better if it still had the TV show's title, but what can you do? Releasing a similarly titled movie a year after a buzzworthy film is a recipe for box office disaster. Grin and bear it, that's what I say.

Does that mean it'll be called The Legend of Aang for it's UK release?

The legend of Aang sounds better than The Last Airbender as a movie title.

There's a short article on M. Night Shayalamanakakuku too www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=22380it doesn't reveal anything wowzing, but it's cool to see the writer and director being very committed and excited about his project. at the very least, it won't be a cash-in, and will be made with passion and care. hopez.

Oh well. "The Last Airbender" is obviously not anybody's #1 choice, but maybe they'll play up the Fire Nation's raids on the air temples to make it click (it's all too easy to forget that Aang is the last surviving member of his people while you're watching these fluffy new Book 3 episodes).

If anything, I think the Avatar title was dropped because copyright laws and all. "Avoiding cofusion" sounds like a white lie to me.

Actually, titles are not subject to copyright law. If I wanted to make a movie called Jaws, but based on a completely different idea, I can but it would be foolish of me to do so since there was another movie called Jaws that is a bit of a pop culture staple. "Avoiding confusion," as odd as it may seem, is the truthful reason.

Personally I don't care what they end up calling it so long as they make it and make it well.
Frankly we all know we will go see the first live-action movie even if it's called "Appa Slober on a Stick."
Besides for new inductees to the 'Avatar religion' the movie title needs to be easily understood. We can mess with their heads after they've assimilated and become 'one of us.' LOL

I'm really mad that they had to drop Avatar from it just because James Cameron's lazy self has been kicking some generic sci-fi concept around in his fuzzy little brain for the last decade or so, and swears up and down he called shotgun.
**** you, James Cameron. I hope your movie bombs like the last generic 3D sci-fi crapfest, Final Fantasy.
If they absolutely had to drop Avatar from the title, then why not replace it with Aang? Aang: The Last Airbender sounds better and would work better for the sequels.
