I read the "His Dark Materials" trilogy a few years back, and thought they were pretty cool. And for awhile now I've been looking forward to the first movie. Doesn't come out til December, of course, but I watched the trailer online today, so I thought it couldn't hurt to start a thread a few months early. Or half a year early, whatever. I am really looking forward to the movie more than ever... there are always plenty of movies I want to see, but usually I don't get a chance to get out to the theater and have to wait... usually long after they're on DVD before I ever see them. But this is one I'm definitely going to make a point of seeing in the theater. In fact I think the only reason I can stand the wait is because I'm also currently looking forward to a stretch of warm weather....

Im definitely looking forward to the movie, but i hate the marketing strategy. Theyre trying to piggy back on LotR, which is unnecesary since it can do fine on its own. Not too mention after all the fantasy epics, they should try to advertise it as a more personal character driven story, which it is.

I didn't really like the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. I might see the movie to see how it turns out on film.

I love Pullman's writing. he manages to be not as confusing or over the top as Tolkien, while simultaneously not being so simplistic as Rowling.

He manages not to be as over the top as himself?
I didn't find the trilogy very exciting.

I didn't find the trilogy very exciting. Just because somethings a fantasy trilogy doesnt mean it has to be epic batttles and crap.

My favorite book in the trilogy was the Golden Compass, and I can't wait for this movie (though I must since it comes out so long from now). The girl playing Lyra is adorable, and I hope she does a good job.

I find it slightly amusing that the actoress' first name is "Dakota"

Yeah, I remember a couple years ago thinking Dakota Fanning might be good as Lyra, so I thought it was interesting when it turned out to be another Dakota playing her.

The other day I saw Golden Compass Pez dispensers at walmart. That means the movie is getting closer now, so I thought it was a good enough reason to bump this thread. Seriously, this is the movie I am most eager to see this year...
