^ You've got to be kidding me. It always seems that over-religious people have something they need to complain about. This is America, where you don't have to follow a religion, so they shouldn't take it so seriously. Geez, it's like those crazy people who protest against Harry Potter and The DaVinci Code. I wish they would give it a rest.
Yes, I'm just waiting for the movie and I'm really disappointed about getting rid of the religion. But I think it was best for the movie, or else ratings would drop solely on the religion bias rather than the actual story.
EDIT: Just to let you know, the Golden Compass will show on Saturday DECEMBER 1 IN SELECTED THEATERS [/b]

POSSIBLE SPOILERISHNESS: I saw it last night. I went with a friend of mine, who's also read the book, and with my big sister, who hasn't. My sister liked it okay, but said she wished they'd gone into more detail. My friend and I were disappointed. I went into the film with a good attitude, I really did. I was excited and hopeful, and I tried to keep a very open mind, even though I was put off right away by the girl who played Lyra. She didn' have that rough-and-tumble, loveable quality. She was expressionless and kind of boring. That kind of thing I could maybe have gotten past if the rest of the movie was really good. But there was so much wrong with it. It wasn't just the religious aspects they glossed over; everything was kind of skimmed over. The movie was less than two hours long, so there wasn't any time to go into detail with anything. I would have liked a little bit more exposition, time to set the scene and get to know the characters. You never really got a feel for how much a part daemons are of their humans, so the events at Bolvangar didn't have the impact that they could have. Throughout the whole movie, I was trying so hard to be forgiving. I even tried to ignore the fact that a couple of major events were out of order. But then we got to the part with the armored bears, and I started getting agitated, and could see my friend getting twitchy, too. Apparently nobody could agree upon how to pronounce "Iofur Raknison," because his name was changed to "Ragna." And they totally wussed out on the backstory of he and Iorek, making the bears seem lame and silly. Oh, and there's no Tony Makarios. Billy Costa got his role instead, and they flitted through the scene in which they discovered him so quickly that you barely noticed it anyway. Basically, they took every aspect of this movie that was chilling and thought-provoking and made it...dumb. I'm sad, because I was all set to like this movie. I really was. But I couldn't.

^ I watched it last night too. I really was disappointed with the way the story was made. The actors were fitting for their characters. I actually liked Dakota Blue Richards for the part of Lyra. She looked and acted the part, in my opinion. Yeah, I agree about how they messed up Iorek's storyline, making him "lose" to another bear instead of killing it and also how Lyra went to the Ice Bears first before she went to Bolvangar. What really disappointed me the most, is the ending I think. They totally ignored the part where they met up with Asriel and he sacrifices Roger's life and she stood at the doorway of a parallel universe. If you ask me, an ending at the doorway of a parallel universe would have been so much better than an ending on a hot-air balloon. P.S. Please use a spoiler tag next time or warn people in advance of the spoilers.

^I actually tried to avoid giving away any major plot points or saying too many specific things about what happened. Sorry if it came across as spoilerish. But yeah. I figure they wanted to give this movie more of a "feel-good" ending. They'll probably put all the stuff with Asriel at the beginning of the next one.

^Nah, it's OK. I think you're right about the ending . I didn't expect anything as good as LOTR or anything, just maybe around the Harry Potter level. As for not being detailed, it would take about 5 hours to get in all the details of the book, so I understand them speeding things up. It just wasn't as good as I expected, but it was still good. I think the concept that intrigues everyone the most is the whole concept and idea of daemons. It was that one thing that pulled me into the story. Makes me wish I have one. By the way, did you go to the Daemon Generator? It's like a quiz that tells you what kind of daemon you have and stuff like that. edit: Fixed your spoiler tags.

It's been awhile since I read all three books. I just saw this movie earlier tonight. The movie did jog some parts of my memory of the first book. I went to the movie knowing that they changed many events and things of the book...but... I went with a different state of mind. I viewed it as a different alternate Compass universe. Much like Hayao Miyazaki's version of Howl's Moving Castle. So in the end, I wasn't disappointed. Actually enjoyed the movie for what it was worth. There were a few funny parts in the movie and the crowd actually clapped when the jaw was punched out . It's not as bad as everyone makes it out as. It's rushed but I like it more than a lot of the book adaptations that I've seen so far.

The thing is, I knew it would be different, and I was okay with that. I don't think I set my expectations unreasonably high. If it had been different and good, as was the case with Howl's Moving Castle, I would have been pleased. I actually like most of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies despite their differences. This one I just couldn't get into. But, you know, that's just my opinion. Just because I didn't enjoy it doesn't mean nobody else will, yeah?
Oh, and Pure Simplicity, I took the daemon generator quiz after you mentioned it. (It's on the movie site if anyone's interested). I got a raccoon^-^.

^ Haha, I got a Snow Leopard. I'm the equivalent of Asriel... not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing. Here's the link for the Daemon Generator Quiz www.goldencompassmovie.com/yahoo/ I heard that the budget for this movie was more than the Lord of the Ring movies, just a strange fact, since I did think that the Lord of the Rings movie has almost no match when it comes to movies. EDIT: Can't really believe it got such a low rating. It must be the Christians again (not that I have something against them). I saw the negative comments and the vast majority of them are bashing its controversy.

*sigh* This movie was a tad bit disappointing. But it did have a few good scenes. I hadn't read the books in awhile, but I remembered some parts from the movie. However, this movie was really rushed. One of my friends that went hadn't read the book and was really lost. Everything was happening too quickly without any real explanataion. And I wasn't too crazy about the girl who played Lyra; her expressions and acting didn't match Lyra's personality much.
Really sucks that people went so crazy over The Golden Compass because of religios issues. They should have left it be since it's just a fantasy book written for entertainment.

My daemon was a crow, his name was Aesop ^^
My friend and I read the books and found them interesting because of how it talks about religion. I mean, really- even if you are Christian, you have to admit that there are some interesting points of debate in the series. I was really disappointed that they cut some of the religious references out in the movie, but I suppose a movie is supposed to entertain, not to get ideas from. Plus, the movie is already getting bashed by Christians, even though it has no direct reference to religion...
Well, I'm Catholic, and I read the books without converting into an athiest. And the movie's supposed to be almost free of religious reference...? I don't see what the big deal is about the movie, it's just the books that talk about religion plainly.
Ragna? Noo...

i thought it was good and i thought the actress who played lyra did an exceptional job. you can tell they are trying to put off the ending until later because they don't want all the people who did not read the book driven off. unlike LOTR they haven't filmed the other movies yet so they want to see =how this movie does first before filming more. but i think it will be reviewed really well, however alot of kids are gonna like the first one and then have to see the real golden compass ending in the beginning of the Subtle Knife.

^ Actually the reviews are pretty bad. Last I checked, the User Review was a C+, and it has a 44% on RottonTomatoes.com Also, about the religion issue, look at this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKLrneC9NrUIt's so unfair how the athiests are so badly represented and they're being bashed.

I wish people would just give it a rest about the religion stuff. It's not going to harm anybody if there's a little religion reference in a movie. But I do hope they would make a sequel.
