When I first started watching Avatar, I would get so excited and tell my family that this really cool show was on and yada yada. Parents weren't too concerned, cause I didn't really talk much to them about it. But I would bug my brother about it...cause I liked it and wanted to express my feelings.
Then I was watching the Northern AirTemple once. And my mom came into the room and said, "is this an okay show?" in that tone of 'I'm not sure my child should be watching this'. So my guard went up from then. I shut my mouth. Cause I figured, if my mom was iffy on a few-seconds worth of the NAT, how would she feel about something more...cosmic, graphic, etc.
So, everytime Avatar came on, I would go away to the lonely basement and watch Avatar. But I would always keep one ear open to footsteps up above and the door opening.
My point is, even though my parents haven't got too exposed to Avatar, I know they wouldn't like it. I'm sort of sheltered. I've been that way my whole life. My parents jump out at any little thing that seems bad right away. And my parents just don't understand how I'm not going to jump off a roof thinking that I can airbend my way down or something. And I'm a firm Christian, I'm not going to make Avatar some kind of idol.
But my parents sort of see it that way. Or would.
Are there others like me?

I'm ot like you, in fact my parent really don't care taht I watch it. But they do make fun of it. Yeah, I know kids who have to watch it 'underground' though. I'm glad I don't have to do that or else I'd have to act obsessed with that evil yellow sponge.

My mom's cool with me liking it, but both she and my father think it's a little weird that I like a Nick show so much. My family has watched it with me a couple times (I convinced my brother and sister to watch COD with me), and I could tell they liked it all right. My dad doesn't get it at all, though. At least my mom lets me watch the new episodes uninterrupted.

My parent know whenever a new episode of avatar comes out, get out of the living room! It's Avatar time and no one is getting the remote for half an hour, no matter what. Now they don't get the shows and the only reason why they know only two names (Aang and Katara) is becasue I'm always talking about shipping since well, look at my sig. But since they don't get it they are always making fun of it. And then becasue of my A:TLA OCD when they get name wrong or ask questions I have to give them a long witted discussion and at the end their like, how do you know all this! And don't get the discussion anyways with all the A:TLA terms I use.

My parents don't mind that I watch Avatar, but they get kind of annoyed with it. If I've been watching for a while, they'll want me to get off the TV. Even though they pretend not to like it, my mom and brother kind of watch with me. My mom and dad won't by any of the DVDs (And I NEED to see that unaired pilot!!!)

Interesting topic, I thought there was already a thread somewere on this, but I don't remember were. I guess not, I could just imanged it. Haha. Okay, anyway. My parents compeletly love the series. They don't mind me watching the show at all, my mother sits down in our room and watches everytime a new episode comes on, while I am normally in my Uncle's bedroom alone. They find nothing wrong with the show...they understand that when 7:30 comes along, that means NO one bothers me while I go off to watch it. The only time where it annoys them, is how I react to some things. Espcially with some choice characters. But they're just normally cool with it. My mother used to be a little concerned about the Spirit World messages they were sending out, she told me to look over them, but on the second or third viewing of SOTN, she understood that it wasn't bad at all. So she cooled off, and that's when she started to get hooked on it. So, they all love it, and the characters. I understand how parents may think this is a bad show for children on the first viewing, but give it a chance before you make your judgement, just like my mother did. She over-reacted, but she turned out to be one of the biggest fans in my family. So, just give it a second chance is all I say to worried parents. Edit: +Javu+, the unaired pilot, is exactly what it sounds like, the unaired pilot of Avatar that was shown on the Book One boxset on the special features disk. If you're curious here is a link to the screenshots. Because it's not that easy to understand what they are acutally saying, because Mike and Bryan were being commentators on the episode. Making it rather difficult to hear. -Screenshots-

My parents have always known I've loved it, but I never really wanted to show them what it was. And as I feared, when my mom saw it she made fun of it being dramatic. I really think she is sort of interested, but doesn't want to make it look like she enjoys a "kid's show". My brother really likes it though. I won't let him see new episodes with me, but he enjoys watching the series. He is also younger and doesn't fully get it. Someday they will understand, but never will I allow anyone to see the new episodes in the same room with me. If I did, my reactions would be too strange and would probably get on everyone's nerves.

Use the Edit button next time. And my mom is oay with Avatar. She doesn't watch it, but she asks me about it when she notices me watching it.
