Many, many fans have speculated about the possibility of bloodbending pretty much since the beginning of the series (and I think there was a resurgence of speculation after The Swamp). So it's nice to finally see it introduced as canon. It was definitely a creepy episode from start to finish, and I wish they would've timed it to air a bit closer to Halloween, but this wasn't too far off. Anyway, of course Katara is going to have to use it sometime in the future, and I look forward to seeing that.
It was also cool to see flashbacks to the southern water tribe, especially seeing the fire nation ship getting iced... the same one Aang and Katara explored in the first episode, I think. I could be wrong, but I almost feel like the first episode foreshadowed this episode... general creepiness, scurrying rodents, door slamming down...

HEY! I was gonna post the face in the cabbage! I've been waiting for this episode to air just to do it!
Beat me to the punch, will you...
That episode was gorgeous. Hamma was a bit overdone, but then, she's evil so...
I want to know why the villagers didn't realize Katara was a waterbender. It was pretty obvious, since they saw the end of the fight, that she was either a waterbender or a witch. Wonder why they didn't do anything.

I'm not so sure she'll use it... she seemed pretty horrified that she used it... even when she had to to save her brother and lover Only if she is put in a terrible situation (like i sadi maybe sokka dying) would she use it... only when she is so emotionally hurt she can't think EDIT: HOLY CRAP! IT WAS THE SAME SHIP AS THE ONE KATARA AND AANG WENT ON!! that's probably why they showed it in the "previously on avatar"

Guys... the bending of water inside a person has been around since the beginning of Season 1. It was on the Nick website and the Lost Scrolls: Water book.

I think I found an easter egg. When Katara takes the cabbage out of the grocery basket, it looks like a face, maybe Gran Gran's because Katara says, "She kind of reminds me of Gran Gran," as she is holding the cabbage. Screencap: What a find! Now, this episode was just plain creepy. I think it would have ben more appropriate around Halloween, but things happen. Anywho, I don't see what the big deal about Katara getting Bloodbending right away is. It's already been stated, but it's not like she was controlling Hama, but just holding her in place to keep her at bay. If she had truly instantaneously mastered Bloodbending, she'd have been controlling Hama in the same way she was controlling Aang and Sokka. And it's not like she'll have any real opportunity to practice it all the time, as she can only do it on the night of a full moon. I think it's an amazing, if sickening, ability, and if she wanted to master it, she would, but you all saw her reaction to Hama's pronouncement, "Congratulations, Katara. You're a Bloodbender!" If that's any indication, I think it means she won't want to do it ever again, even if it's the legacy of her tribe. Amazing though it may be, but Bloodbending is ultimately an evil, cowardly act to use in a battle, and Katara doesn't seem the type to act dishonorably or cowardly in battle.

Actually one thing that bothered me about the episode was when they were shopping, Sokka mentioned Aang being the Avatar, and Hama was walking with them, and there were strangers all around who could have overheard. And this was before they knew Hama was from the Southern tribe.

gambitia: lack of study of elemental mythology
I mean if you listen to the survivor about how he escape the "witch"...you get a correlation between a Zuko V. Katara fight...final season one.

Wonder why they didn't do anything. I was thinking the same thing! And Hama even turned to her and said something like, "you are now a bloodbender!" Surely someone must have heard that! And if someone did they should have been like, "Get that girl! She can also control people!" Which would be interesting. Except it probably wouldn't fit into the half hour time frame

Guys... the bending of water inside a person has been around since the beginning of Season 1. It was on the Nick website and the Lost Scrolls: Water book. OMG I remember reading that book. It said that airbenders never had any super-deadly finishing moves. The only way for air to really become balanced with the secret moves of the other nations is for Aang to learn to take the breath out of someone or something like that from some random guy in the spirit world.

Another thought occurs to me. Has Aang fully gotten over his reluctance to learn firebending yet? It seems like it would be a good story point for that to be compared with Katara's reluctance to practice bloodbending. They'll both have to accept that there are things they must do to win the war, things they'd rather not do... and having this in common will bring them even closer together.

My only complaint is Katara's sudden mastery of the new Waterbending techniques- yes she did them when hers, Sokka's, and Aang's lives were in danger but still. I don't think it's possible to master such complicated techniques- that were (most likely) unheard of in the North Pole- in such a short amount of time, even with the full moon. It's like saying so long as their's a full moon Katara go Sailor Moon/Mary Sue on us and superbend without training because her natural skills are just that good. That annoyed me too, but I guess for plot purposes/ime constraints *shrug* Hama is my favorite villain now. I love old ladies, I love crazy as villains, and anything to do with rats is awesome.

They won't know Katara was a Waterbender.
Because A.) They never saw her bending water and B.) They have no idea what Bloodbending is, all they know is that Hama is a witch.

I said "won't want to", not won't ever again, period. There may be times when she completely loses control of things and has no choice, and even though she'd really rather not, she would have to.

Aang and Katara bonding over fire/bloodbending? Maybe but Aang says something about firebdending in the next episode and he doens't seem that upset about it... And I don't think that Katara will every use bloodbending to help win the war because that would make her no better then Hama... She is repulsed by the technique and won't simply get over that to use it casually in battle
