What I don't understand is, why does it matter that Sokka now has an uber cool sword and is training to be a master swordsman? Wasn't his original problem that he couldn't help put out the fire because he didn't have any special powers? Well, being a master swordsman isn't going to make him any more effective at stuff like that. Sure, it'll make him an effective warrior, but he's still going to feel just as useless if another fire comes around. I think the episode would have made more sense if he got his butt kicked in a battle, or something similar. Still, this was probably my favorite episode out of the new batch. It doesn't matter that Sokka can't put out a fire; he feels more useful by acquiring a new skill. Putting out a fire has nothing to do with proving Sokka a warrior....it was a device to introduce the conflict. Sokka being a swordsman is going to become relevent later; for now they're just releasing the fact to the audience--would you rather he become a master swordsman out of nowhere? That would be bad writing.

When I saw Iroh take off his robe and saw how he became Bumi-fied, I'll admit: I felt all flustered and giggled like a school girl.
Zuko best watch his back. Iroh is the new sexpot of the Fire Nation. (I feel so dirty saying that XD)

I really wonder why TPL was harped on so badly. Yes, it is my 3rd, above the headband, (Yes, the premiere to me was a bit rough... in more than one place) but I still liked it very much. Not every episode has to be plot-driven.....
SM is my favorite episode thus far, just because it felt smooth, and had clean presentation. However, while the buff Iroh pwns, I have quams over what is going to happen.

I didn't get to see this episode, because I recently moved into an apartment complex and when DirecTV was suppose to come, they couldn't install it because of a tree in front of the building. DirecTV, you have officially made my list. Anyways, I had to wait until Sunday to get my Charter cable installed. It is a local cable service up here in the High Desert in California. Anyways, it gets every channel DirecTV had, however a good majority of channels I watched had to be ordered in an additional package. Anyways, my point of the post is, does anyone know where I can watch this episode online or if Nickelodeon will repeat it again? I heard it was on TurboNick, but my brother's dsl won't be on until Tuesday, so I cannot watch it right now. So will the episode remain on TurboNick until that time? Are there any other sites I could watch this episode. I feel so left out of the entire picture, seeing how this could be the very best episode out of season three so far.

i don't know if the random bad guy in painted lady wasn't random, they had to retaliate to someone after the factory was blown up, the only people around were the villagers. But they had to have some sort of a conflict in the episode. In "Imprisoned" a conflict was inevitable because the baddies were all around them, but in "The Painted Lady" the conflict only happened because the baddie suspected the villagers somehow DESTROYED the factory without being seen. I'm sorry but the conflict only happened for the sake of action, it was totally avoidable but the episode needed some sort of action packed way for Katara's identity to be ultimately revealed. Besides, how would the still weak villagers destroy the factory. Remember that Aang leveled the ground, Katara severed chains with her water, and then she summoned water through the glass windows. How could average fishing folk possibly do all that? But never mind reasonable thinking because the baddie was our hotheaded villain and so needed to appear to terrorize the poor villagers for the sake of an action sequence.

Poor Sokka's Master, by the way! Piandao has a sad past, no wonder he could identify with Sokka. I can't believe his parents would abandon him!

^^ I love that they created this whole past for someone who may never be seen again. But I adore him, so I'm glad to know he came out on top. I do have a question though. Piandao said that Sokka now had to train himself. How's he going to do that? Doesn't he need someone to fence/spar with? Did he really learn all the 1-2-3 moves in such a short time? I thought that little bit was lame. At least Pakku gave Aang a box of scrolls and a master to continue his training with. They could have had Paindao give Sokka some more direction or instructional material to take with him. Maybe a video tape.

That would have been great! I could see Fat running up to him and handing him the bag: "Hmm... it's a Pai Sho tile, and... what's this? A copy of 'Swordfighting for Dummies' with an instructional DVD included? Sweet!" One other things I loved about this episode? Toph said out loud that she learned Earthbending from Badgermoles. That was amazing.

I'm not sure if anyone has said this or not but now that Sokka has a sword I wonder if we'll ever see his boomerang again.

I'm not sure if anyone has said this or not but now that Sokka has a sword I wonder if we'll ever see his boomerang again. The boomerang is for long range. The sword is for short. I bet we'll see it. As long as I don't have to see him running headlong with his machete cocked back, yelling his brains out, telegraphing his attack like a moron...I'll be happy.

I thought that little bit was lame. At least Pakku gave Aang a box of scrolls and a master to continue his training with. They could have had Paindao give Sokka some more direction or instructional material to take with him. Maybe a video tape. It seemed like actual sword techniques was the least important thing that Piandao wanted Sokka to learn. Sokka was a gifted warrior, really...he has been training how to use weapons all his life, right? He wanted to go off to war with his father. What was he doing in his free time? And he was already good enough with his machete to knock small knives thrown at him by Mai out of the air in The Chase. What Piandao was teaching him was to focus on his creativity and intelligence...which was where Sokka excelled. He didn't stand a chance against Piandao when they were fighting face-to-face but after...? Notice what the master was praising him for...darting around and trying to tire him out, using his environment, taking the high ground, making the surroundings fight for him. Those were the important things. Sokka was already pretty dang good at swinging a sword...we've seen he can be fast and accurate to match even Mai (throwing a pipe onto the tip of an arrow in Avatar Day). Which is why he learned so quickly...he already had the instincts and the training, but when he was taught how to open his mind to the environment and encouraged to think outside the box, he excelled. How can Sokka train himself? By memorizing the landscapes, practicing his colligraphy, and working the forms by himself.

^^ I hear ya, but I know there are specific forms (1-2-3 moves) that go with any sword fighting technique and, even though the master found Sokka's best asset to be his creativity, those forms are very important as well.
It seems like Sokka has mastered the creativity angle. It's the actual technique he needs to learn and a box of scrolls (or a dvd or Video Professor for Sword Fighting) would be more helpful than just some praise for his clever mind. How can Sokka truly be confident in the Way of the Sword if he doesn't know the technique of the sword backwards and forwards?
I know what you're saying and I know that's what they were going for, but the reality is the master (who I love to pieces) only partially taught Sokka.

Or they needed Sokka to learn the skill quickly to properly pace the series and decided to screw realism and make sure that he got his new spiffy skill and his sword and moved on with his life.
