^Hmmm. Good point and very interesting theory. I wonder if there's fanfiction with a theory like that. kaibasgirl: So far no one's died. Okay, the authoress mentions Aang killing Ozai by inflating his lungs so hopefully that was the character death....hopefully

@marvel- They do love Toph, they were just too afraid that she'd get hurt, so they never let her out in public.
It's not like they were just keeping her around for kicks...? If you go watch Blind Bandit, you can see they really love her, they're just trying to protect her.

OOooooooooooooh!!!!!! Interesting thoughts there Marvel! The last two espeacially. Think it might be a combo of the two? K9, whoa, cataracts, I never would've thought of that! It totally fits, so maybe, just maybe, there is hope. Having an Optomitrist for a dad has it's perks. ^_^

^Yes, I can see the care and concern in that episode. But just what drives that concern is the main issue here.
Same reason why Aang loves Katara. We know he loves her. But WHY? What's the rationale? Because she's the first girl he's ever had constant close contact with? Because his love for her is similar to his love for Gyatso and the Air Nomads? (as pointed out by Pathik)
Lao sends two mercs after the Avatar to get his daughter back. Very fatherly, right? Yet a few moments before he's being oppressive to her. She just proved to him that she's not helpless, (Water and flying aside) yet he does not take that into consideration, he is being a typical old school father, not his fault, it's just the way he was raised. Though his style of thought is more in line with that of the Water Tribes. Women should stay at home and leave men to their business. Look at Mrs Bei Fong. Doesn't say much does she?
One reason why I think Toph and Sokka will not work out. Yes Sokka has learned that men and women are equal but that's just him. What about the rest of his countrymen? Even then old habits die hard.
Second, Sokka is very family oriented. He'll most likely head straight back home after the war, hopefully with the love of his life in tow...*coughsukicough*. Tell me, how do Water Tribe women live? Suki would probably change the whole sexist mindset and I'm sure Toph would too. Except that Suki has the advantage of not being blind on ice. Toph might like it there just because Sokka is...but in the long run she'll hate it. She wants to roam, enjoy life and not be stuck on a giant ice cube, even if she does cope with being a ...yuck house wife...she can't see on ice.
"Oh they can live in the Earth Kingdom! It can still work."
Highly unlikely. Sokka would not go for it. He left his grandmother and his father whom he's not seen for years back in the South Pole. He's not going anywhere anytime soon.
Yes there will be trips to other nations from time to time. But can Toph live with that?
Magic Eight Ball says...Outlook bleak.
Plus given that Sokka has not shown ANY romantic interest in Toph so far. He likes having her on the team, who wouldn't? But she's a little sister to him. Nothing more.
Back to the Bei Fong rant...
It's a given fact that the Avatar is power incarnate and that only the most powerful benders can match him. Yet Lao sends two unknowns to do the deed. Xin Fu is basically a thug and Master Yu is not that good of a Earth Bending Master. As I've said before I wouldn't be surprised if Lao makes a deal with Fire Nation authorities to hunt down Aang under the pretense of getting his daughter back when in reality he just does not want to be made a fool of by a 12 year old, unknown to him that the 12 year old is not Aang but his own daughter.
Hopefully Sokka's hawk didn't die of exhaustion over the ocean or get eaten by a bigger bird-thing (The Avatar world must have a radioactive core...that or everything is genetically compatible with everything else.) and that the Bei Fong's get Toph's letter. Though they would probably dismiss it as a trick.
Most likely the Bei Fong's are no longer enjoying the high life. The Fire Nation occupation should have robbed them off all their rich trappings, all of it being taken by the Fire Nation to fund their war effort and to provide for the Fire Nation citizens. The Fire Nation sure love their factories and other heavy industries. Wouldn't be surprised of the town of Gao Ling became a strip mine.

marvel26: About Poppy, in the commentary Mike and Bryan says that she's not too bright, she just goes along with whatever her husband says--the typical submissive wife they had back then. It's more common for noblewomen to be submissive toward their husbands than peasant wives to their husbands. A lot more.
Also about the Bei Fongs fortune, good point. I never thought about their money being taken away...
What? No I doubt the Bei Fongs are like Ozai; in the commentary they just said that her father's an overprotective father, but just being a jerk and going about it wrong. Denying her existence? They didn't do that, they hid their daughter's existence for protection. I know that's odd, but that's how they went about it so that no one knew they had a daugher; so no one would go, "Hey let's kidnap the daughter of Lao Bei Fong for money!" like Xin Fu did.
As for mothers...well....let's not go there, since some of you may like Ursa. XD

Hence why FN women rock more. XD
So we know Toph definitely gets her brains and spunk from her father's side, not her mothers. Maybe her good looks come from Poppy, but that's about it.

Oh I've seen submissive women in relationships. A girl I know is like that. Her boyfriend doesn't abuse her anything like that, because I know her through him. She just lets him take the lead.
Even he's puzzled by it.
"Shouldn't she be...I dunno...annoyed at least?"
"Why are you asking me? The single one!"
FN women being independent and strong might have come about due to necessity rather than tradition. Due to the war, the FN may have reversed their stance on womens' roles in society. Simple human resource actually, make use of everyone.
If there was no war, who knows? Azula might have grown up to be just like Yue. Okay that's just unnatural....
I wonder if Ursa could fire bend? High possibility as the royal blood line must be strong...plus we all know who her grandpappy was.
I bet on her...bad days...the servants talk about Mount St. Ursa.

Well, Ozai was a...well, he didn't have the nicest tempers. I think she was submissive to a point, but she wasn't a complete pushover. I think part of protecting their daughter was also because they were scared that other kids might pick on Toph because she was blind, or play mean jokes on her. Anyone here read Rhythms by xcgirl? It puts the Bei Fong's overprotectiveness nicely into perspective.

That actually would be very interesting. Though it would seem the royal family of the NWT and the FN is very opposite. NWT: Chief with council Loving Chief/father subtle princess FN: Absolute Monarchy Cruel sovereign/father Take charge princess You may be right about the necessity thing with the war and women.

That's with the war.
If Sozin wasn't a megalomaniac things might have been different for the Fire Nation. You'd still have absolute monarchy though the sovereign may be benevolent (No war means Lu Ten doesn't take a dirt nap and Iroh ascends. We know he's benevolent.) plus Azulon may be instilled more compassionate ideals in Ozai, and the princess...well...maybe Azula was just born that way.
Wouldn't it be just funny if it's revealed Azula was dropped on her head as a child?
Steering it back to Taang...or at least the Earth Kingdom...
The EK women don't seem to be submissive in general, I think it's more of a choice for them. Unlike in the Water tribes where they have stricter rules.
Toph's choice is obvious: Not submissive.
Problem is her dad wants the opposite. In fact do the Bei Fong's spend time with her? Did they take a personal hand in her upbringing or did they just leave it to the teachers and servants? I'm guessing...no. The Blind Runaway Bandit was pretty much raised by Badger Moles.

Her father. He probably did it. It's all Ozai's fault >< Ursa: "Careful dear. She's just a newborn. Don't crush her." Ozai: "Hush woman. I've held Zuko! I know what I'm doing!" *Whoops!* Ursa: "......." Ozai: "She didn't even cry! Oh she is STRONG! Much better than that pansy Zuko!" Ursa: "She's unconcious! She could be brain damaged!" Ozai: "Nonsense! She's blocking out the pain like a true warrior! Who's daddy's little pyromaniac! You are! Oh yes you are!"
