Great book, but the sequel was somewhat lacking in the epic feel of The Giver.

The Giver was a great book, but when I read it I was really too young to understand the symbolism. I should pick it up again. I think the biggest part that bothered me.... (SPOILER) was, at the end, whether or not the boy died. He kind of left it up in the air.
What was the name of the second book?

@ww: "Gathering Blue" is the sequel I believe, and I read that one as well. Of course, I read both in 6th grade, and I agree with you, as such, was too young to understand the symbolism and whole concept of both books, so really didn't like them as much as I could have, had I read them now.
Of course, I think I liked "Gathering Blue" better......maybe I read it a year or two later and don't remember? xD
Though I'd have to disagree with you about the ending, though endings like that bug me sometimes too, they're usually good and what I strive for in my own writing; trying to leave the ending out there in the open, or make the readers ponder what happens next. xD

In 8th grade I got really annoyed with the author, Lois Lowry.
Lois Lowry came to my school and spoke (shes an excellent speaker)
Then during lunch, me and some other kids met with her and we all talked. At some point she mentioned how she didnt like "Brave New World" and other dystopian novels. I found that interesting seeing as "The Giver" was a dystopian novel.
Lois Lowry: Well "The Giver" isnt really a dystopian novel.
Me: It isnt? I always figured it was.
Lois Lowry (completely serious): No, its not. Its describing a kind of society, that trying to be prefect, but that is what makes it so terrible.
Me: Ummm...

I really like this book!
I read it last year in 8th grade, but we are reading it now in "Freshmen Skills For Success", and I find it just as interesting as when I read the first time.
I am also reading "Gathering Blue", I don't like it as much The Giver.
@kaneda: What does "dystopian" mean?

@kaneda: What does "dystopian" mean? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dystopia1984, brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, and The Giver are all dystopian novels. Although Lois Lowry convinced herself "The Giver" isnt.

Without looking at the article and using my knowledge of all those books; is dystopian a futuristic "utopian" society gone wrong?

*Sigh* As others have said, when I read this book, I was too stupid to understand hardly any of it. I think I'm going to read it again sometime.
