I don't have a broad knowledge of graphic novels, since they're pretty expensive for me, but I don't think it should matter whether an artist is Japanese or American.
Manga is just a term that implies a comic or graphic novel originating in Japan, yes? Most, if not all manga have different styles and plotlines. It's the same with American-made "manga". There's nothing about it that could possibly make it worse than manga from Japan, unless the style or plotline that the specific artist is using is something that you dislike. Generalizing manga from America and saying things like "most American manga artists are worse than Japanese manga artists" is untrue.
Manga's popular. People are going to take styles from manga and incorporate them into their own drawing style; that's just what happens. There's nothing fundamentally different between Japanese and American manga that makes either one better or worse; whether in style, plotline, or authenticity. Everything varies depending on the manga you're reading, not the country in which it originated.

If any of you are updated with Tokyopop manga, you'll know that they are introducing American manga artists. What do you think of American manga? Personally, some of these artists could do better. I mean, how is this anime style? Atomic King DaidoganAnd maybe they'll do anime style, but they totally mess it up. I'm not fond of American manga artists. There are a few out there that are wonderful, but not many. One big problem there is the term "anime style". There is no set "style" that all artists use. Everything is done according to personal preference, not some strict set of rules. For example, compare something like Lupin the Third to something as detailed as Bleach Both anime, both Japanese, but completely different.

Oy I hated it when whiney a** otakus complaine about American manga. They're so arrogant it's not even funny. So called "otakus" are whiny, pretentious, and stupid.

I'm sure there is good American manga and I have seen my share of bad Japanese manga, but I don't like the way American artists portray the anime feel. Yeah, they'll get the look but not the feel. I like reading a good storyline but it's kind of hard to follow it when you have Atomic King Daidogan art in your face. Some of the artists that win in the Rising Stars of Manga...... Sometimes I wonder how they won...... Maybe Tokyopop values good stories over good art. I haven't really seen the more recent winners but the art improves with each artist.

I just think its funny how people are criticising Americans for attempting "anime style" on an Avatar forum.

Art improves over time, but when the story sux, there is no over time! Just look at the early Simpsons and even the early Peanuts...compared to the later evolution of both...rather crude!

The Peanuts!! XD Avatar is among the few good American anime. Anyone know who Cirrus is? If you don't, go here to her site and look at her stuff, especially the requests she's done: Cirrus Arts (Done by a girl from L.A., I believe)More people like her should start a manga!! She could even partner up with someone who has a good story and draw the manga with their story. That's what the artist of Death Note and Hikaru No Go does.

Why? Because they're not Japanese? That's silly, IMHO. If not, why do you "just hate them"? I agree with Bard and Syara and Darkblood, etc. It shouldn't matter if the person isn't from a certain culture group that started the fad. It should matter about how good the art and story is. There are probably just as many bad Japanese manga. XP

I know. I've seen my share of American artists who draw like that, but Japanese people are just as perverted.

I like the Japanese style better and people are perverted in their own ways Anyone can learn to draw as equally as good as someone. If I spent all my time drawing and having drawing lessons, etc., I could be as good an artist as anyone in any type, be it surrealism or manga. XP There's no definite manga style, IMHO. Some manga characters have really elongated features, like noses, some manga styles are cleaner, and some are more detailed. It just depends. xD Oh well...to each her own.
