^ Surprise! Haha...
------------------------------
Zuko rode and rode. Katara was able to, with difficulty, pull herself up a little more so she could hang on to Zuko's waist to keep from falling off.
They finally reached the rocky hills. Zuko steered the ostrichorse into a hidden cave.
"Oof!" grunted Katara as she landed on her rear on the hard, cool ground of the cave. Zuko took the ostrichorse's reigns and guided it to the side and out of the way. "Thanks for being so gentlemanly and helping me up," said Katara and she dusted herself off. Zuko said nothing.
"I'm going outside to wave Aang and everyone over," she said as she made her way to the cave's entrance. She stopped when she heard manly voices outside. Katara glanced over at Zuko, who also stood frozen, listening. Zuko grasped her arm and pulled her deeper into the cave.
"What about the others?" she whispered. "How will they know where we are?"
"We can't leave until the soldiers have gone," hushed Zuko. "Not for a second. We'll just have to search for the Avatar and your friends later."
"How long do you think we'll be stuck here?" asked Katara.
"Better not be long," he murmered in response.

Oh, I don't have Anything to add to the story, but I'm here to just say I like the story; and if something like this happened in the show, I actully wouldn't mind shipping Zutara, probably.

"I hope Aang, Sokka, and the others will be okay," sighed Katara after a while.
Zuko didn't respond.
"I hope they're not too worried about us."
Again Zuko did not respond.
"...you're not one for small talk, are you?"
"Nope."
"You're weird."
"Look who's talking. Flying around the world on a flying bison with a lemur and the Avatar? Nice."
"Well, you don't have a very normal life either."
Zuko just shrugged and started to stare off into space. Katara leaned against the cave wall and slid down somewhat next to him. *Today will be a long day,* she thought.

I really didn't want to do this, simply because I'm not very experienced at this ...apparently a Kataang shipper is better Zutara writer then I am >< -------------------- Zuko lead the ostrich-horse and the waterbender deeper in the cave.
"It'll give us more cover," Zuko said as he read Katara's questioning look.
"Why don't we just ride the bird?" Katara asked, "Doesn't that make more sense?" Zuko's frown deepened with irritation as he retaliated.
"Apparently, you were having trouble with that, now weren't you?" as he shot her a death glare, "Ginseng deserves a rest anyways..." he muttered to himself. With the silence of the cave, Katara easily heard it and stiffled a laugh, obviously amused.
"Ginseng?" she said as the laughter bubbled over.
"My uncle named him..." he grumbled as heat came to his cheeks, not something he felt often. Luckily, the cave's light was slowly diminishing as they got farther and farther from the entrance. Once their relative distance was far enough to not spot a small fire, Zuko lit one in the middle of the palm. Katara gazed into the flames as if mezmerized. "What? You've never been so close to fire? Or is it the fact that you've just realized that fire isn't just a weapon, but a necessity for life?" He sneered, "They say firebenders are horrible, but by the way everyone else prejudges, I could say the same about them." Before Katara could argue with that until the exiled prince tripped on some stalagmite. Their source of light went out as he doubled over in pain he attempted to mask.
"Are you ok?" Katara inquired in genuine concern.
"Of course I am," he said. His pride blinded him as he tried to stand, and dropped on his knees.
"Light your fire thing again," Katara requested, "I can help." Zuko remembered those same three words when Azula attacked Uncle Iroh.
"What can you do?" he said disrespectfully.
"I was just going to heal whatever was hurting you, but I see that my assistance is unwanted here." How dare he! She was just being polite. But she couldn't have just left him in the middle of the cave and kneeled down next to him. After several prods in the arm, he finally lit a flame. "Which leg?"
"Right."
She rolled up his pant leg to see a bloody ankle. She touched it gingerly to examine it (he shut his eyes at the contact).
"It's sprained. I haven't tried to heal a muscle before, but there's always a first time for everything, right?" She gave him a small smile, one of care not pity. It made Zuko want to smile back...it reminded him of someone in his life that cared about him. His heart panged at the thought of her... Katara summoned water dripping from the stalactites and formed a glowing blue glove and put it against his ankle. Expecting to feel more pain, he relaxed at the cool touch. It was so comforting...He almost felt sad when the feeling left as she lifted her arm away. She cleaned the blood with more water and gave him an ever bigger smile. -------------------- So what's happening with Sokka, Aang, and Toph? What are Zuko and Katara going to do in that cave to pass the time [no perverted thoughts here please.] You choose.

^Nice!
....but-
....but-
...His name is Julius Emo Song!!! (cries!)
Heh, sorry, Ginseng is a fine name for it/him/her!
-----------------------
"They should be down here somewhere!" called Sokka to the rest of his bison-riding-buddies while a chattering lemur climbed onto his head, putting its paw above its eyes to see better in the failing light. "Aang, do you see them?!"
"No! Do you see anything?!"
"No! Momo, do you?!"
Momo just chattered in what seemed in the negative.
"Toph," cried Sokka, "do you see-"
"No, I don't see, Oh-Great-Bison-Steerer," she answered dryly.
"Erm, right," muttered Sokka.
Meanwhile...
Zuko stared at the pretty, smiling girl kneeled in front of him.
"...you smile too much," he frowned, after a moment.
"Well, you frown too much!" she answered; her smile had dissappeared quickly. Katara got up sharply, her back turned to the ex-prince, and stormed into a corner of the long cave's stone corridor, her arms folded.
"Have a little bit of a temper," -Zuko tried to rise from the ground- "don't you?" he added with a groan.
Katara couldn't help but turn around and smirk at him. "Says the oh-so patient firebender."
"Hey, I'm not in the best of mood's either, so how 'bout you just cut the sarcasm right now."
"Only if you do," Katara stated, leaning her back against the cave wall.
Ginseng gave a huff and shook his head.
"We better settle down," said Zuko as he took Ginseng's reigns and lead him to the corner opposite Katara's.
"Hey, you didn't answer me!" she accused.
Zuko shrugged. "Fine, whatever. No sarcasm from either of us. ...unless I say so."
"Because that's not unfair at all," added Katara, sarcastically.
Zuko couldn't help but smirk as he carefully sat back down, his back against Ginseng. The smirk dissappeared before Katara could properly see it, though, as Zuko grimmaced horribly when he accidentally put his weight on his injured foot.

Katara was crestfallen.
"I didn't complete heal it, did I?" she said quietly as if she had failed.
"Apparently not." he sneered but instantly regreted it when she bowed her head in embarrassment and..shame? "It feels better than before.." he muttered. Zuko wasn't one for apologies. She instantly brightened up.
"Maybe I can try again later!" she said excitedly.
"Keyword being maybe."
"Are you teasing me?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.
"What do you think?"
"I think you are," she said as she crossed her arms across her chest. Ginseng cocked his head at the arguing pair, resulting in laughter.
"Who knew you could laugh?" she said with a giggle and stuck her tongue out at him.
'How childish...' he thought. They began to sit in silence until Katara decided to spill her heart out to him. She talked about being the only waterbending in the South Pole (after her mother, of course) and how the "warrior" wasn't allowed to go to war because he was only 13.
"My father left with the rest of the males in my village to fight the war. When you arrived, the closest thing we had to protection was Sokka," she giggled again.
"Your food obsessed brother?" he cocked his eyebrow.
"Yup. Now my mother....Everyone's always told me that I had my mother's eyes. I'm glad I do. I haven't seen her for five years so when I see my reflection in the water, it reminds me of her." She tried to hold back her tears and failed. Ginseng got up and walked to her side of the cave to comfort her. Zuko couldn't stand to watch women suffer. He often saw his mother crying in her bedroom when he went to ask if she wanted to play and ended up feeding the turtle ducks alone, but the puffy-eyed firelady always came a few minutes later to be with him. He followed the ostrich-horse and sat down next to her awkwardly.
"What happened?" She hesitated before answering.
"She was killed by the Fire Nation."

Zuko felt a pang of guilt at Katara's answer. Wait, why am I feeling guilty? I didn't kill her... he thought. But the feeling wouldn't go away.
He hesitiated, but said, "I'm sorry." Katara said nothing. "Really. I am."

Oh! Stupid me, I forgot that Katara had healed his leg! Haha! Well, nice cover, you guys! Gah, I HATE it when I forget details like that! Anyway...
..........................................................
Katara let out a dry laugh.
Zuko felt a little hurt and turned away from her in frustration. "The stupid, fickle girl..." he thought.
Katara didn't look at him at first. She had laughed because she couldn't believe that he actually felt any sincere sympathy for her. However, she knew in her heart that he had answered honestly. She hated herself for being so cold even for that one moment. She then looked to him, but found him glaring into the dark corner of the cave, away from her. Then suddenly, they had eye contact.
Her eyes asked him for forgiveness. Her mother's eyes begged for him to give her hope. Hope that they would be alright. That there would be no hard feelings. Oh, how her blue orbs gleamed. They seemed to allow him to gaze into her very soul.
Katara gazed into is eyes, feeling curious and confused. ...she told him her story. So what was his?
"What was your mother like?" she asked.
Zuko smiled wryly. "MY mother? I thought this was a lecture about YOUR family..."
"I thought we were done with sarcasm."
"So you thought."
"You are so cruel," smirked Katara.
Zuko leaned forward, only inches from her face. Katara held in a gasp.
"I'm a prince. I'm the epitome of gentleman etiquette." -he raised an eyebrow- "Or at least that's what Mom always said I should be. ...you would have liked her," he added, leaning back to his former position. "My mother, that is."
"Yeah. Maybe I would have. Oh, and in case you haven't realized, Ginsenj is trying to eat your hat."
Katara laughed as Zuko pushed the confused and slightly hurt ostrichorse away from his head.
"So tell me about her. ...your mom," said Katara.

Hey, I'm new here so i dont really know if i can add onto the story but i want to so if you really dont like it, it will probably be bad because its like 2 in the morning, but feel free to delete it hahaa
alright, here goes
__________
Zuko, his hand laying gently on Ginseng's head, stared cold and hard at the cave wall. He could not look at Katara, let alone respond to her question.
Katara, sensing tension and pain in Zuko's silence, contemplated on whether or not to approach him. Although he knew everything about her and was beginning to feel a sense of trust between the two, what did she really know about him? Son of the firelord, yes, but the fire nation soldiers were also after him. What about his past was such a mystery? Placing her delicate fingers onto his tense shoulder, she wanted to let Zuko know that he could trust her, even if she was not so sure about herself.
Zuko, jumping at first from the waterbenders touch, gently relaxed, and gathering up enough courage for his voice to say steady, turned around and in a terse, dry reply, said.....

Sorry if I get any facts wrong.
......................................................
"My mother was perfect. She was the only one in my family besides my uncle who ever really cared. She dissappeared when I was eight. No one would talk about, no one. ...except for Azula who would skip around saying Grandfather or Father killed her. She didn't care. No one did. So I don't see why YOU have to!"
Zuko stood up adrubtly and turned away, his hand resting on the cave wall.
"Zuko, I lost my mother, too. I know what it's like! Please, if you don't want to tell me anything, then you don't have to tell me! I won't force it out of you."
Zuko suddenly turned to look at her.
"Why do you care, though? Why?! I've been chasing you and your friends, making your lives miserable. And yet you say things like "I won't force it out of you" and...and you put your hand on my shoulder and... I don't understand! What, is it because you can heal with water, you feel like you have to heal EVERYONE?"
Katara stood and put both her hands upon Zuko's shoulders, holding him tightly so he couldn't brush her off or move away.
"I heal because I can, and I heal because I care," she said, looking straight and determidly into his wide eyes. She removed her hands. "Now, I have some questions for you! Why did you give me back that peach? Why did you save me? And why did you not try to kidnap Aang again?"
"Some questions don't have answers," he stated. He moved to the other side of Ginjseng, being careful to remove his hat so it wouldn't get eaten. Ginjseng huffed.

I thought this thread had...died... --- A melancholy silence hung in the air, drifting, hovering, like the way a wrong note continued in a song, with no end, except, there was no sound. Zuko fidgeted uncomfortably, leaning against the wall of the cave, as waves of anger, guilt, and sadness engulfed his emotions. They consumed his cold heart, and her words reverabrated throughout the walls of his mind. I heal because I can, and I heal because I care. There was a small hope, a little flame that flickered inside his heart, that convinced him that maybe, just maybe, she did. But then there was that darkness. That voice in his head that hissed the reality of the world, that despairing whisper that told him that joy was an impossibility, and that he should be done with the world, and the world with him. It slipped into his heart, flooding it, devouring it, but as he felt that tiny fire of faith fight back, he opened his mouth. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been harsh with you." He could almost see her shimmering, azure globes gazing at him, surprised, and her mouth open in a small gasp. The waterbender stared at him, shocked, for a moment. "We-well, you should be sorry. But I forgive you." Immediately, the scarred heart, cold, like an unforgiving winter, felt a flood of sunlight, and the snow, the ice, began to melt as that little hope grew bigger.

*pulls back cobwebs* Huh...well, BUMP. ---
Katara looked down. "So, uh, you have a sister, don't you?" He nodded. "Yeah. Her name's Azula." Katara made a 'hhmm' sound. "I see. What's she like?" His golden eyes narrowed as a flicker of wrath overswept his face. "She's a firebending prodigy." He stood up calmly, facing the wall of the cave. "My father favored her."
Silence.
Katara felt a ray of pity and sorrow shine upon her heart. "I'm sorry." Her cobalt eyes averted towards the ground. "But, you are actually a really good firebender." --- *yawns* I'm tired... *falls asleep*
