DeviantART is being inundated with Jessuko manips...he certainly seems pretty enough in the Season Three look: by helenovision...but the season one look? I can see him arguing away the baldness like Haley Berry argued away Storm's blue eyes in the X-Men movies...

Lolz, all the Photoshopping in the world isn't going to change the fact that Jesse's not Asian. I mean, of all the characters, they couldn't find one Asian kid - in all of their "extensive search" - to play Zuko? I find that pathetic. I would have thought that Shyamalan, being Asian himself, would have been more sensitive to this, but apparently I'm wrong. Some search they conducted. And while I know they might have chosen a baby-faced Katara to look not so out of place with Aang, the idea of her being placed in scenes with a 21 year old Zuko is just wrong. One of the things I always liked about Katara is that she was never - never - intimidated by Zuko. I always saw theirs as a relationship of equals, whether they were friends or foes. But to have 11 year old looking Katara here going one-on-one with 21 year old Zuko - it just makes Zuko look like he's picking on a little girl, as opposed to a fellow teenager who's only two years younger and who has whipped his butt countless times. Dollars to doughnuts now that Shyamalan's going to cast himself as the freakin' Guru.

Feel free to correct me if this information is inaccurate (Wikipedia is not the best source), but I read that Shyamalan wanted to work on the A:TLA movie because, from watching episodes with his own family, he saw that it had good potential to become a movie. I was interested, in the beginning, to see how this would turn out. Shyamalan, himself, is Indian and I thought maybe the multicultural aspect (although predominantly Asian) of the show was a factor in inspiring him to work on something different than what he usually does. I guess I was wrong. I guess he (or the movie studio) just wanted to work on something that would reel in the cash from the tween audience. He got rejected from working on Harry Potter right? I won't be surprised if people who weren't interested in or didn't know about A:TLA before, suddenly flock to the theaters. I'm disappointed that the cast is not the multi-racial one I had a vague idea of, but well, that's the movie business sometimes. Just how involved are Mike and Bryan on this project? Seeing how the audience is mainly Caucasian kids I'm guessing that M Night went with this casting decision makes it easier for kids to relate to the characters. and If they go for this route they better get the VA for Zhao to play Zhao. Seconded. If they actually get Jason Issacs for Zhao, I might consider renting it when it comes out on DVD. I think the only way I'll go to see it at the theater at this point is if Samuel L. Jackson gets a part. Any part. I don't care. He could be the Cabbage Man cameo if Shyamalan hasn't already reserved that for himself. That would be the cherry to top this sad ice cream. I believe the laughs I would get would be worth the money if it happened. But I'm not holding my breath.

That link had some pretty harsh comments...
Anyway, after watching Twilight (having never read the book), I'm not that disappointed. I'm a bit indifferent to this development.

By the looks of it you could of have either an all Asian cast or an all Caucasian cast having a mix given the world would be a bit iffy.
I disagree, actually. It's supposed to be A WHOLE WORLD, unless I misunderstood the map entirely (possible), so a range of ethnicities is much more sensible than a monochrome world. The artwork in the show pretty much did that anyway. Casting the actors (and extras) of each nation as being consistently of a particular physical type would have made sense to me - needn't be married to specific ethnicities in our world, even - I confess I never did consider the water benders to be Inuit, despite the obvious external trappings of furs, although it sounds like there's an assumption that that's what they are?
I'm gobsmacked that they're electing to do this with a bunch of white people, though - I mean, it's going to be VERY difficult to not just look dumb, I think.
I still think it would just be weird having an all white cast giving the highly Asianized setting. Hopefully it won't look like a bunch of cosplayers trying to dress up as massive Asian stereotypes.
EXACTLY! Argh!

Although I'm a bit indifferent when the casting news was released, after reading the fans' reaction here and other places as well, I do see they make a valid point. Deny it we may, but the plain truth is that the Avatar world is clearly set on Asian aspects and influences, and that not being grasped by the producers, director, and overall crew and cast of the movie would set disappointments, and would bring heated reactions from the fans. Let's not fret too much though. The movie is still at works and the cast is not yet set in stone, so there's still hope. And if that's how it's gonna be, I for one will still watch the film nonetheless. Out of guilty pleasure. XD @ the current lineup casts: Wow. Jesse McCartney? Jackson Rathbone? It seems like Avatar will be the next fandom that's going to be invaded by screaming fan girls.

Did you really expect anything different? Has Nickelodeon ever made a movie out of anything that's supposed to have real substance? It's Nickelodeon, people, not Peter Jackson. And even if it wasn't Nickelodeon, how many animated shows have actually faired well in a transfer to live-action? I can think of GTO and Gokusen as being good live-action adaptations of manga and/or anime, but they're praises are drowned out amongst the screams of movies like Super Mario Bros., Resident Evil, Dragonball Evolution (since they decided they couldn't call it Dragonball Z anymore), He-Man, and Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children.
Actually, Advent Children had real potential, but it was all scrapped for an hour's worth of battle sequences.

Lol, riverbird, the Ember Island Players. @bc - Ooh, Mushishi? Good show. =D Yup ~ I've been trying to put my finger on just what I like about Mushi~shi so much. It's disturbingly addictive and reasonably profound (but then, what anime isn't nowadays? Okay, don't answer that.) It's got no fighting, no romance, just ideas. Intriguing. I'm sorry, did I hijack this perfectly good live-action-movie-casting thread to advertise talk about a show of merit? Silly me. Dollars to doughnuts now that Shyamalan's going to cast himself as the freakin' Guru. You know, I'll bet you're right. I just saved a bunch of money by switching to Shyamalan! Eh, I hope some of it is just rumormongering to drum up interest. Jason Isaacs as Zhao would of course be a good idea, but I've already got a little movie of that playing in my head (hey! no peeking! ) and I don't need someone else coming along and destroying that by overwriting.

Word is being spread about writing letters to the Paramount Pictures producers in charge of the movie urging to change the casting -- you can read more about it at Aang Ain't White @ LJ.com. </advertisement>Thanks for that awesome link Musogato. I've already written my letter and will be mailing it as soon as possible. I would have thought that Shyamalan, being Asian himself, would have been more sensitive to this, but apparently I'm wrong. Some search they conducted. So seconded. More importantly, for someone who has a daughter of color, I would expect Shyamalan to try and give her MORE awesome role models with her skin tone to look up to, not take one of the ones she has and bleach her for his live action movie. Well, I wouldn't say that. In my opinion, Katara actor's age and general youthfulness is pretty much the only thing that is not horribly wrong about this.

I think Katara's youthfulness works (like you said, one of the rare things that is good about this casting) - but the fact that the actors picked to play Sokka and Zuko are so much older-looking than her is what bugs. I mean, the actor who's playing Sokka is 24! Could they really not have found a couple of talented 16 year olds to portray Sokka and Zuko opposite this young-looking Katara?

Wow, when I saw the casting I thought it was a joke to be entirely honest. None of the actors are who I would have chosen to play their respective characters and I find it disturbing that such an Asian Influenced show doesn't have Asian or ethnic leads. Jesse McCartney as Zuko? The casting basically killed any excitement I might have had for the movie.
