Let me start out by saying that this film is rated "R" for probably language, torture, gore, and so on. It has Spanish audio with English subtitles, but it didn't stop it from being a fantastic film. It recieved four stars and I believe quite a few foreign film awards.
It's a morbid and relentlessly fascinating fairy tale about a young girl living in the chaos of WWII. She discovers a strange labyrinth and learns from a fawn that she is the princess of a mystical land.
I saw it today and it is now in my top ten favorite movies of all time. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested, and am wondering if anyone else has seen it yet, or is thinking about seeing it.

^ Yeah, there's a part where this guy gets stabbed in the back, the knife-wielder drags the knife down his back, stabs him again over the heart, then into his throat, and after that makes his mouth about an inch and a half widder. Then he sews it back together, and then drinks a bottle of whiskey. (It's like putting salt on an open wound. Not smart.) He isn't exactly the brightest crayon in the box...

The pale man is scary. And then he bit off the heads of the faeries. Freaked me out.

anyone that watches this film and only sees a monster biting an insectoid faeries' head off is missing the point completely...but before i continue..i have to lay a disclaimer that none of what im about to say below should be taken as meaning that im anti-jewish... laberinto does..however..raise the question of whether anti-semitism could be justified..to which my answer is a resounding no... maybe its just me...but i saw a very anti-jewish message at the end..since its very easy to link genesis 22 with the scene where ivana baqueros' character is asked to kill her baby brother...the implication is that the jewish patriarch abraham acted immorally when he made the opposite choice as baquero by not refusing to kill his son.. which im forced to agree... of course killing a baby because god told you to do it is no less immoral than killing a baby because pan/franco [doug jones] told you to do it...so in drawing the comparison above..del toro hints that abraham would have followed franco...again..i very much doubt that most jews today would have done likewise.. but OTOH..theres no denying how francoish the israelis are.. or the paralells between the spanish civil war and the occupation of palestine...

unfortunately..most of the responses in this thread have focused more on the special effects (in both worlds) rather than the underlying meaning.. franco.. etc...

Well i happened to find the pale man scene to be particularly interesting and memorable. So I commented on it.

I loved this film. The fantasy scenes were done beautifully, I loved all of the monsters. Though the Captain was the scariest part of the movie.
I'd comment more about the film's meaning, but I'd end up either sounding pretentious or sounding like a moron.

I think you are looking too deep into it. Just because they mention the sacrifice of relatives doesnt mena it has to do with genesis 22. Its completely irelevent.

I saw the movie a second time now.
Its an excelletn movie.
I forgot how violent some of the scenes were. Like when the captain smashes the kid in the face with a broken bottle repeatedly. And when the cpatain gets his mouth cut open and he sews it back up. Very violent.
But an excellent movie. I still dont quite get what the toad and the pale man represented...

I watched about half, and walked out. For me, it was abymal. I also thought that it having all those acadmy awards was misplaced.
