KatAang is a very popular ship nowadays and with good reason.
this ship has been hinted at since episode 1 of season 1, but is it a true relationship just because there is so much supporting it?
You see the thing is when we think about "relationship" we usually think "romance"
But what if Katara and Aang's relationship was something else? Is it romance or something else?
Now there is a lot of support for KatAang all over the series, the fortuneteller, the possible kiss, all that stuff that happened in "secret of the firenation"
But I have seen a lot of different kinds of relationships where everything seemed so obvious and yet at the end everything things were so different.
Now to be honest I always thought that KatAang was predictable, even with "the kiss" in the cave of two lovers we are not sure if Aang and Katara will fall in love
this is what we call the lure play, many series have done it and looks like Avatar is no exception.
The lure play involves two characters who do indeed like eachother but there is alway another relationship involved in the background.
Soap operas are known for this, and mind you just because Katara and Aang kiss doesn't mean they will fall in love, hey I know several series where they played this card and the main character always wound up with someone we least suspect.
Take Robotech/ Macross for example, for those who don't know what it is well I will explain later.
Anyhow in the show you had the main Character Rick Hunter/ Hikaru Ichijo who was a fighter pilot for a large army who were fighting against these aliens, and he had two debated love interests:
Lynn Minmay and Lisa Hayes/ Misa Hayase
For all intensive purposes I will just refer to each character by their American names from here on in:
Basically at th start of the series Rick seemed interested in Minmay (note her name is Chinese, so her "last" name is really her "first" name, so I will not refer to her as Lynn) but at some point the relationship soured as Minmay got into a sining career and Rick was often fighting the war.
But strangely Rick started to fall in love with Lisa, and at the beginning Rick really hated Lisa, Lisa was uptight and was often at odds with Rick.
But at some point Rick and Lisa got together and eventually they got married, while Minmay kinda just drifted off...
Of course Robotech/Macross actually had another relationship where former enemies became lovers.
There was one of the secondary characters Maximilien Jenius/ Max Sterling who was another fighting ace and he got the attention of one of the baddie aliens Milia Fallyna/ Miriya Parino.
Once again from this point forward i will refer to the characters by thier american names.
Now heres the thing about Max, he was timid, nerdy and shy, but put him in the cockpit of a fighter and he instantly becomes a flying ace.
Now Miriya was an alien who was bred purely for war, she knew nothing else other then to fight and kill, but when she encountered Max in combat she felt she found and equal.
Later she altered herself to be human, and infiltrated the base where Max hid out, now if you might ask how she was able to get in well once again i will explain later.
Anyhow she meets up with Max and plays a video game with him and she finds out that he was the one that took her down in battle, you see Miriya felt her honor was broken and she altered herself to be human just to track Max down and kill him.
At some point Max asks her to go out with him to the park and Miriya does so, but she comes with a knife in hand so she can kill him.
the pair duel and Max wins, Miriya begs Max to kill her but he doesnt, instead he befriends her and later marries her...
So yeh stranger things have happened in animation.
Now as for my explaination of robotch/ Macross, well let me say you are in for one heck of an explaination.
Back in the 80's Anime was still in its infancy, in fact before Robotech/ Macross there was barely nothing except Speed Racer.
In 1985 a company named Harmony gold purchased a anime series known as Macross, Macross was about a spaceship that crash landed on earth and its aftermath.
The series was set in 2010 as humans have studied this starship and adapted its alien technology for human use.
Unfortunately this ship was being chased down by an alien race known as the Zentradi, an alien race of humanoid giants who were bred purely for warefare.
the big bad aliens tracted the ship here to Earth and began a war with the near helpless forcess of Macross island (thus the name of the starship, in America the ship was known as the SDF-1 but in Japan the ship and the island were called Macross.)
As a defensive the ships captain activated the alien ships warp drive, unfortunately the island was caught in the wake of the warp and to make matters worse a entire city surrounded the ship, in the years between the arrival of the Macross and the arrival of the ship people had come to macrosss island to make it thier home.
The ship was put into orbit around pluto and for the first half of the series the ships mission was just to get home.
Now the people of the island survived because they were in shelters and eventually the citizens of the city rebuilt thier city in the belly of the spacecraft, hey the thing was about a mile wide so there was plenty of room.
Now heres the thing, Macross was set for syndication in the US, the problem was that the show only had about 36 episodes and that was much too short.
in comprimise Harmony gold spliced macross with two other series, and the finished product was called Robotech...
Of course by now you have many factions over the series, the purists, the robotech fans, and the neutralists.
I fall in the third catagory.
anyhow there goes that part, and I have more... though i have a lot more to post 0.o
