For the Kenshin fans on here, this is my alternative ending to the sad and tragic end to the OVA series of Kenshin. Even though the OVA ending is not offical, I still think it could have ended a happier note. So I wrote this small scene of Kaoru's final moments. Please comment on how I can make it better, if I made any misakes, etc. Enjoy! (Warning: SPOILER ALERT!!! Tissues may be required)

It’s been a year since Himura Kenshin's sorrow-filled life ended peacefully in the arms of his beloved, Kamiya Kaoru. Now, stricken with the same illness that took her husband’s life, Kaoru lies on her death bed, nearing the end of her life as well. At her side are her friends, Yahiko, Sanosuke, and Megumi, and her son, Kenji, to wittness her final moments. After bidding her farewells to Yahiko, Sano and Megumi, she has a personal talk with her and Kenshin’s only child.
Kaoru(Weakly): Kenji?
Kenji: Yes, mother?
Kaoru(giving a sick but spirited laugh): Did I ever tell you how much you look like your father?
Kenji: Heh... I hear that a lot from Yahiko-san and Tsubame-Dono. [Kenji has finally picked up a trait from his father: refering to woman with the -dono honorific]
At this point, Kenji is trying to be manly and holds back his tears. Kaoru reaches for his hand.
Kaoru: I know, that you have never been very fond of your father. You always stressed about how he would leave and how he should have stayed with us, his family. But you know how your father had to go through so many hardships in his life.
Kenji(gulps back tears heavily): I know mother… Yahiko and Master Hiko told me all about him… How he used the Hiten Mitsurugi Style to redeem himself and help those who couldn't help themselves.
Kaoru: Yes. But before I die, I want to tell you my side of your father’s story.
And so, Kaoru reflects to Kenji on how she first met Kenshin, how she accepted him even after revealing his hidden past, and how she eventually grew to love him. She tells Kenji of how she and Kenshin were bonded eternally after the Jinchuu Arc, and how Kenshin still had to struggle with his guilt, even after having the family he thought he would never have.
Kaoru(coughing): Your father, the feared Hikitori of the Revolution, did it all so then the people -the children, in fact- wouldn’t have to go through the same pain he did. (smiles) You could say…that he did it all for you, the son he thought he would never have.
Kenji looks down, trying to retain the tears that have found a way to trickle down his cheek. He then looks up with regret in his eyes, regret of how he treated his father. Kaoru is getting weaker by the minute. She struggles to say her last words to Kenji.
Kaoru(weakly): I only hope….That you can find it in your heart….To forgive your father for leaving us for all of those years….And to love him…..Like we loved you.
Kenji(Holding his mother’s hand tightly and crying): I-I will mother. I promise, to you and to father, that I will use his sword -the sakabotou- to protect the weak like he did and, to protect Chizuru.
Kaoru(smiles while coughing): Your father would be proud of you.
Kaoru only has a few moments left in this world. She stares into space, and she begins to speak softly…
Kaoru(quietly): ….I can see him now……He’s……Waiting for me….. Shin-...
Kenji: Mother?
Just then, Kaoru’s hand goes limp. Kenji catches a glimpse as Kaoru closes her eyes for the last time with a smile on her face. She has quietly died, just as her beloved did. Kenji gently lies her hand down besides her, and weeps quietly so the other won't hear him. Yahiko, followed by Sano and Megumi, come in. The three see Kaoru’s lifeless body and stand in shock.
Yahiko: What happened?
Kenji(still weeping but not facing the others): She’s gone.
Megumi(Starts crying): Oh, Kaoru!
Yahiko looks away, with a forlorn look. Megumi turns toward Sano and cries into his chest as he embraces her.
Sanosuke(Looking down sadly and hurt): Jo-chan…
As the others mourn, Kenji wipes his tears and gives a soft smile to Kaoru, who has a peaceful countenance.
Kenji (thinking): Mother…Father… I hope you find happiness…In the next world.
Kaoru wakes up in a grove of cherry blossoms, in full bloom. She is in her more youthful form, with her favorite indigo ribbon in her hair.
Kaoru(looking around): I guess I’m in heaven….
Still looking around, she spots a figure facing the horizon by a nearby cherry blossom tree. Kaoru squints her eyes as they fill with tears when she finally sees who it is. It is Kenshin.
Kenshin(Still facing the horizon): Kaoru-dono.
He turns around facing Kaoru. It is the same old Kenshin, in his youthful form, with his same smile, only the cross-shaped scar on his left cheek is gone.
Kenshin(smiling): I’ve been waiting for you, Kaoru.
Kaoru(quietly): Kenshin.
Kaoru takes a step, and then runs to him, crying.
Kaoru: Kenshin!
Kaoru approaches him, stumbling, and eventually falls into his embrace, crying. She hold him tightly, still crying, as Kenshin strokes her hair.
Kaoru(crying quietly, and smiling): We’re finally together, Shinta.
Kenshin nods and looks into Kaoru's eyes while he wipes away her tears. He smiles at her as she smiles back. The two then take each others hand and embrace each other, as they gaze into the distance, as the cherry blossoms blow through the wind.
