Coulda made a bunch of money being a bookie. You know, stuff like taking bets on, hypothetically speaking, who would win if Appa and Momo got into a sword fight. My money's on Momo, but Sokka would get his cut after I got mine.

yeah i was like, "i wonder what zuko is doing?" Something with Mai that is too mature for Nickelodeon to show. ;D Hey, we can dream, can't we? Seeing as how the it is a show for 6-11 yr olds I doubt anything dirty was going on. That would certainly not get by the censors in anyway, that'd just be a wonderful message for little ones to see huh?! They were cuddling, nothing more!

... Maybe the other members of the gAang hid the schedule. Anyway, I liked this episode. It's nice to learn a little more about Sokka, and that Toph is starting to forgive her parents.

The sheer amount of fan service in this episode is mind numbing, all of which is aimed at Katara. Seriously, Sokka and Toph talk about how wonderful Katara really is while she is bathing nearby and listening. We already know about Katara and how nice and motherly she is, we didn't need Katara's personality to be explained. We needed Toph's personality explained so she didn't come across as a "crazy person" but no, instead we are told why Katara is so nice by both Sokka AND Toph all while getting to see a bathing Katara. Why? We see so little of Toph it is very hard to understand her character while Katara not only has been in more episodes she plays a more active role than Toph- we needed Sokka to try and explain to Katara why Toph acts so rebellious so we can understand Toph and so we don't perceive her as a "crazy person."
Toph was shown as a scamming addicted little nut job who in the end also likes Katara and openly praises her while simultaneously looking like a vulnerable wimp who Katara has to encourage.
Despite how eager I was for a fight between the two it turned into more Katara glorifying; totally unneeded in the long run.
Not too mention that another episode which features plenty of skin is again animated by monkeys.

That's because as Aang's love interest, she's more important than Toph to the story.
You seem to forgetting the part about Toph teaching Katara that she should loosen up once in a while and not carry the burden of the entire team by herself.
As for the hug between Toph and Katara, that was a wonderful sisterly moment that we need more of.

This episode had a lot about Toph and her relationship with her parents. I'm surprised you missed all that.

This episode had a lot about Toph and her relationship with her parents. I'm surprised you missed all that. I didn't miss all of that, Toph and her parents was just handled incredibly stupidly. "I actually miss my parents, thanks for showing me that Katara, you're the best." I didn't feel like Toph truly came to grips with her parents, only that Toph now too likes Katara.

I liked this one, actually. Toph isn't unshakable; none of us are. So when Katara hit close to home regarding Toph's guilt about leaving her parents (a completely realistic emotion), Toph lashed out at her. The conversation they shared after the second round of scams was predictable, but also appropriate, I think. And the resolution they came to in the prison cell wasn't an award-winning performance by any means, but the right things were said.
So what if Toph was vulnerable in this episode? She's a pillar of unflinching solidity in most others, and if she were like that 100% of the time, her character would get stale and boring.
I didn't get the impression that she was a nut job. And Katara didn't do too much encouraging in this episode. For the first half she was discouraging, and when she decided to pull the scam with Toph and they get thrown into prison, her first reaction is to revert back to the Katara from the first fifteen minutes of the episode. When Toph points out that the last scam was her idea, Katara is the one in need of encouragement. ("I wanted to show you that I'm not so motherly. I wanted to show you that I could have fun, too.") Toph willingly supplies it to her. ("Katara, you are fun! If nothing else, you're at least fun to argue with.") Then Toph gets down on herself, and Katara reaches over and hugs her to offer comfort. It didn't seem too awkward to me. Their exchange went two ways. It wasn't just Toph spilling her guts, Katara did a bit of that, too.
As for the final scene, where Toph asks Katara to help her write the letter, that was one of my favorites. Imagine what kind of humility Toph must have had to muster before asking for help with a task as simple as writing some things down! It's a testament to her character that she was able to ask for assistance in that situation. Her blindness hasn't been seriously addressed (apart from this episode) since "The Serpent's Pass", so she was long overdue.
And man oh man, the scene where Sokka disguises himself as the cop and the bags are piling up in his arms? I belly laughed. For like twenty seconds. Good stuff. =)

Every time I talk about Katara you're right there to say something rude about me. Is it a crime to have an opinion here or is it just wrong to not like Katara? Leave me be.

She didn't give me that impression at all. If she scammed a poor, old, honest man then I'd have that impression, but if she scams some streetrat who plays the shell game and cheats at it, then you will hear" GRATS TOPH!!!!*foam*"

I got a totally different vibe from that scene. (Although, I'm probably biased because I'm a Katara fan. ). To me, it felt like Toph had a lot of growth during that episode; the scene with Sokka didn't feel to me like a "Katara is so wonderful" scene. (They should leave those to Aang, lol!) (Points to siggy). I thought it did a lot to explain why Toph acted the way she did, and that she was admitting that Katara had hit a nerve. As conspiracytheorist mentioned, it had to take a lot for Toph to muster the courage and humility to admit that. Overall, I liked it.

Well getting off of the subject of Katara and Toph. Did anyone see how awesome Sparky Sparky Boom Man is. I mean this guy seems surely undefeatable. Has anyone put this man on their top three favorite characters?
