I voted "I disliked it" it was the worst episode in Avatar history.
Number one I felt that it was like I was watching a water down version of the OC. The whole episode seemed fake. Like I was watching bad acting.
First of all let's start off with the Zuko and Mai delimia. His whole giving her seashell and her not liking it was believable. The whole flipping out about it was not. I can imagine him being angry and keeping it to himselves maybe, but come on. Then Zuko getting jealous over that guy and Mai saying "It's over" was straight out of a Disney Channel sitcom. Can't the writers be more creative. Oh and Zuko's I'm angry at myself thing is so played out.
Ty-lee part in the show was okay until they got to the part where she crys about the whole circus freak thing. But Azula's all being very bad at socializing I just don't buy. She's a princess she had to be taught some form of edicate.
The thing that saddened me the most was that they seemed to use that episode to make it the show more like every other show.
I was going to put I despised this show but there were a few parts that were funny and Zuko remembering things about those pictures and then burning them seemed sincere. But that was it.

I completely agree firerani. I think this episode assassinated the FN gang's characters. I hated all the characters in this episode (except the gaang) and that's saying a lot because Zuko is my favorite character.
Let's start with Azula. Ugh, who was that weird girl and why did she look like Azula? Her social awkwardness seems very unlike the calm confident Azula we saw in book 2. I'm convinced that they just wanted to pull off a few laughs at Azula's character's expense, but they almost ruined her for me. Then there was the part where they tried to show her being nice to Zuko and Ty Lee. I think it wasn't genuine at all, but some people (like my sister) actually thought Azula might be redeemed! Her little line at the campfire about how her mother thought she was a monster and she was hurt was inconsistent. She laughed when her mom disappeared! She never cared about what her mom thought. So, I don't buy that at all.
Next there's Ty Lee. She wasn't so bad, since Ty Lee's always been kind of a shallow airhead. But she was really overdramatic at the end. It made me feel really awkward. She just seemed too much like a typical high schooler, which is a bad thing because I hated high school.
Then there was Mai, who until that point I was kind of neutral toward. Now, I hate her. She was really nasty and snobby. Her constant ennui and displeasure with everything is getting very old. Her deadpan remarks toward everything are not funny anymore. And her little campfire confession did nothing to appease my annoyance with her. The writers failed miserably at making me feel sympathy for her and her character is ruined for me. She is now my least favorite. Then when she and Zuko kissed and made up at the end, I wanted to vomit.
Finally, there's Zuko who I was really disappointed with in this episode. Aside from coming off as shallow and selfish, he just had to be all mushy with Mai. It was...pathetic. The only good part with him was when he took off his shirt with the fangirls, and when he went into the abandoned beach house. Unfortunately, after he left the beach house, he went right back to hanging out with the girls, and being a brat. His little sob session at the end seemed very out of character and I was so embarrassed for him. It was awful. Then he went and helped trashed that guy's house and walked away with all the girls with a proud smile. Wow, not cool. They nearly ruined him and if I wasn't so invested in Avatar, I don't know if I would've watched anymore episodes.
I would've voted that I despised this episode, but since there were a few scenes that made me laugh that didn't come at the expense of the characters (like Ty Lee and the guys hitting on her and and the Zuko fangirl thing), I voted somewhere between hate and disliked.
If you had asked me what my least favorite episode was a few months ago I probably would've said The Great Divide. But The Beach is far far worse.

Lovelovelovelovelove!
The more I watch it, the more I fall in love with it.
It just made so much sense. It explained why the FK kids are the way they are, and it did it in a way that was simply perfect and in keeping with the way the kids are, and I'm still catching little things that explain this quirk of Azula's or this peeve of Mai's even after 20+ rewatches.
I didn't even like it all that much at first...but it keeps getting better and better.

I have to confess... I still think it's among the weakest episodes of the series, and that includes "The Painted Lady," "The Great Divide," "Avatar Day," and "Imprisoned." Just... a waste of time in a season that's short on time as it is. And Ty Lee throwing herself on the ground in tears was just unnecessary. Way too freakin' melodramatic. And the constant "who are you angry at, Zuko?" harping that the girls were doing toward the end was a direct rip off "The Breakfast Club," but done in a far crappier way. Best to leave that to John Hughes, Mike n' Bryan.

^ Wow that's a deep cut. "The Beach" being in the same boat as "The Great Divide" and "The Painted Lady"? ^^;

Hrm... well, I'd say it's in the same boat, but not holding the same oar, if that makes any sense.

It serves as a stand-out failure in the series. I have the feeling that somehow the concept was put to the creative team, rather than evolving naturally, as that for me could be the only explanation for how awkward it was. Avatar explores the relationships and psychology of its characters in every episode - it has never needed an entire episode dedicated to it, and so it felt slow and awkward. My biggest beef is what it did to Azula - they could have explored her personal issues without diminishing her personality like they did, it really made her seem more pathetic than dangerous. I laughed a bit, but mostly just cringing, which whilst I can enjoy in shows like the Office, isn't something that felt right in Avatar, let alone in Avatar about Azula. I also rolled my eyes at the "make fun of the crazy old women" approach to Lo and Li - they had so much more potential than to serve such an unoriginal joke. And I reiterate what other people said about the teen melodrama aspect - it felt like Avatar: Orange County - and of Zuko ending up bonding as a group with the people who his bad choices had left him with. It's not even like it was emphasised that he was trapped - it seemed like he genuinely enjoyed himself. And Azula didn't pick up on his revelations and turn on him, which I found out-of-character. Really bad episode, but luckily, the series didn't wallow in that level of writing. I quite liked 'The Great Divide' and 'Imprisoned', didn't mind 'The Painted Lady', and whilst 'Avatar Day' was baaaaad, it didn't, unlike 'The Beach' really hit me as something awful. I really think this episode was a new low. Oh and I forgot about the "What are you angry at, Zuko?" bit. That was so cringeworthy and synthetic. The Breakfast Club's a great film, but if you wanna pay tribute, do it with a single line, or something - don't try and use it as a dramatic device!

One thing I find when I read this thread....that it wasn't filler. People didn't like but no one is saying it a filler and for good reason. I really also don't see anything of a resemblance of "The Breakfast Club" because isn't that what friends do anyway...I mean in the movie in the beginning, they weren't friends, just six or seven strangers. The only and only way there a remote link between this episode and the movie was the sharing of feeling with "friends" which, isn't that what we do all the time.
One main reason why I like this episode is because it different more way then one. It different from our own perception and stereotype that it scared the hell out of us when we were done viewing this episode. It became an outsider in someway amoung outsiders in here

I loved it because it was a change of pace. I would agree that it was sort of a teen drama-ish type episode but i thought it was funny so i give it an A
