Honestly, still one of the greatest animes ever made. The amount of research that the creator put into the story to truly immerse the viewers into the world of Amestris and the struggles of the Ishvalans. Though there was a stupid article that try to claim the anime was racist because the Ishvalans were the bad guys despite the fact they clearly didn't watch the whole story play out. Plus they had rational reasons for believing what they believed. They were just victims of the war and I think the creator was inspired by the struggles of a native people in Hokkaido.
The storytelling did the hero's journey better than any Western media ever could. That even goes for Star Wars and possibly the Lord of the Rings. Then again, a lot of anime tends to have better writing overall compared to the same old tropes found in Western media. Even slice of life animes tend to portray life better than any Western sitcoms or soap operas.
To liven the mood of the thread, here is the soundtrack for the series.
