And sadly not even Book 3 can save this forum.
I really am the last poster.
Book 3 is shaping up to be better than Book 1 and 2 and hopefully has a continuing story-arc for Book 4 now that Nickelodeon recognizes two books as one season.

Nah, not the last. I'll admit, after watching these first three eps, I'm actually excited for this season and am looking forward to seeing more. I want to see them again before really commenting though, just so I've got my stuff straight.
But generally, I really really like the new characters, especially Kai and the prison-breakers. Anti-Team Avatar? I can't wait to see them all together. I also love that Korra and Asami are actual friends now and get to have air-time to show that, it's crazy that it's taken this long. (or did they have more scenes last season? I only remember them hanging out on the racetrack, and that may have been in Book 1.) I'm glad Asami is teaching Korra how to drive, and I hope they have more scenes together throughout the season.
The sudden influx of airbenders is kind of..... yay and nay for me though. On one hand, it makes for an interesting storyline (especially with ep 3, which I'll get into in that thread tomorrow, maybe), but on the other hand, they are not Air Nomads. This is not the new benders' culture or heritage, and I don't like that Tenzin is trying to shoehorn them into it. I personally don't think it's really fair to his family or to the new benders.
Thinking back to ATLA's Northern Air Temple ep, even though the refugees living there were not airbenders, Aang said they had the spirit of airbenders. And... some parallel to hermit crabs and he was happy about them living there, or something, it's been a few years. Point though, I think, is that Teo and the other refugees were spiritual successors of sort, and for me that is what is missing from this new group of airbenders. They have the powers, but not the spirit. Although if they recieved the powers maybe that must mean they have the spirit somewhere inside, unless it's just some kind of cosmic balancing act for the elements. I dunno, I'm not sold on it yet.
I guess my final thoughts specifically for this first ep that I can remember is.... Would Bumi's pet spirit even be able to wear the cute sweater he knit for it? Also, Mako being ridiculously awkward around his two ex-girlfriends somehow makes me feel better about everything I don't care to remember about last season. Although I kind of wish he stayed in Republic City, but I guess ep 3 made up for it.

I really enjoyed these first few episodes. I felt like there was finally some character development. And for me that's what has really been lacking so far. But there was still some good action mixed it as well.
I look forward to seeing what plays out with the new Airbenders. Very interesting storyline. I'm glad that they are portraying it in a way that seems believable. Like Musagato said these people are Airbenders not Air Nomads. As much as Tenzin is teaching Korra that this is a 'new age' and things are different, he needs to realize that this a new age of Airbenders and the Air Nation may never be what it once was. I just hope that the whole spirit portals now being open story isn't completely abandoned in favor of pursing the new Airbenders though because it doesn't seem like it was resolved. Very unlike Korra just to leave when the president said to. As much as the new benders need guidance, citizens of Republic City need guidance to learn how to live in peace with spirits. Ten thousand years is a long time for the spirits to get use to little or no human interaction, there is clearly going to be some issues arise from both sides.
The whole prisoner plot looks very promising as well. I'm sure we can expect some action packed scenes with this crew. I'm interested to see what they did to be locked away in such high security prisons. I wonder if we'll get a little more insight into the White Lotus as well since they seem very involved.
And last, but certainly not least: LORD ZUKO!! Definitely had a major fangirl moment. Glad to see him back. Looks like he is still running the Fire Nation and handling diplomatic things.

One of the few things I love about the LoK over A:tLA is all the new characters we get to meet each season.
Each season we're introduced to more and more characters, but on a deeper level than in A:tLA. I know not everyone may agree with with me. but something about A:tLA was that it was this epic journey that focused on a small band of AWESOME characters. It is so much fun. But the characters that had a long term impact with repeated appearances past Book 1 were kind of few. (Toph, Azula and gang, and Hakoda are the ones that come to mind). I dunno how to explain it. But it's so exciting to meet these new villains, new relations, etc.
I was also a huge fan of how they handled the Mako, Asami and Korra interactions. I'm so glad they didn't pit the girls against eachother. And I was pleasantly surprised by Mako's awkwardness because it felt like a pretty natural reaction.
I'm personally really excited to see where they go with the airbenders. I jumped up and down when I found out there were more. Since the Air Nomads have always been my favorite and I've been bumbed for going on 9 years now not seeing more than a few of them. I think Tenzin and Korra will eventually find benders who embody the spirit of the Airbender's and want to join and be properly trained. I didn't think Tenzin's cohersion was out of character. We saw in Book 2 how much pressure he puts on himself. I can only imagine I was half excited as he was to find out more Airbenders were popping up.
I am also stoked for the new villains. It was great to figure out that the lava bender is indeed and earth bender. My sister and I weren't sure based only on the trailers. And the armless water bender is awesome as well. I wasn't expecting her voice at all even though I knew before hand she was supposed to be voiced by Grey DeLisle.
Bwah, I could gush for ever so I'll leave it at that.

I guess the idea behind the "lava bending" is a phase transformation... solid earth into liquid earth. Sort of how waterbenders can change water between liquid and solid forms.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if he was a fire bender or not. But in retrospect it seems kind of obvious. And I agree with Paraiba. I hadn't considered it as a phase change, but that makes a lot of sense.
