I've been wondering about this for sometime now after seeing Wan's death. Does Raava act as a sort of cloud server that stores all of the past Avatar's memories, personalities, and spirits so when she was destroyed by Vaatu all data was wiped which is why the link between Korra and them is gone? If this is the case, should this mean there is some way of restoring such data as if you follow Vsauce you'd know that there is still some way of restoring corrupted or delete data. See his video about where deleted files go.

It's a thought I'd like Korra to explore more, or at least try to communicate with Raava about. It'd be nice if they'd have a discussion about it at some point. I dunno. Or maybe it's something they'll address in the fourth book.

My theory is that Raava acts as a circuit. Every human spirit she is born with is connected to the past lives through here via a circuit. If that circuit is damaged you lose the connection.
After all the avatar spirits still exist in the spirit world acting in their own interests. The Avatar Spirit is more of a guide than a storage system.
