After watching tonight's episode of The Legend of Korra. I keep having a suspicion that at the end of the season we're going to see the two tribes united but not under the banner of an emperor, but as a new republic.
The United Republic of Nations saw a great milestone when they elected their first president. Perhaps when both spirit portals are open which I also feel might happen. Both tribes will establish the new Water Republic where they elect their leaders.
Seems like this is the time where we may begin seeing all of the nations adopting more modern forms of government.

I could see something like that happening. I think that might be what Korra would support. I would imagine that Unalaq would want a more Chieftain ruled nation though. I would say that there will be a lot of difficulty uniting the two nations though since they are so far apart. Even with the newly invented air travel, it is going to be difficult to effectively rule both tribes and keep everything fair.

Ever since watching Civil Wars, pt.1, I keep feeling like if both of the spirit portals are open, then it might act as a teleporter as well so that the people can travel between the two poles. If that was the case, it would certainly make it easier for Unalaq to "unite" the two tribes.
But yeah, it would be nice to see if at the end of the season they moved towards electing their leaders, or at the very least the South having their own chief, since apparently they are still led by the North? So, um, I guess not actually being united but fully becoming their own entities.

Personally I don't know how I feel about Unalaq abusing the power of the portals to unite the tribes. Has it ever been used for something like that in the past? Do the spirits really see this as a positive thing??
He seems to know a lot about the portals. I just wonder if he can actually use it for what he intends of it if will blow up in his face.

I feel like it's too obvious that Unalaq is a bad guy here. Like, you couldn't get more obvious if you hung up a giant neon billboard pointed at him.
No, no, if Unalaq is a bad guy, I think he's a puppet for someone else. Perhaps someone from the Spirit World?

Sounds like a viable theory to me. Although i'm still waiting for another episode before I make any myself. I just don't know enough about him to decide if this is a fakeout of if he really is a cut and dry bad guy.

It is kind of obvious he is just Varrick. It was obvious Varrick was up to something since chapter 1.
