In the Welcome to Republic City game on Nick.com, the description for the Satomobile includes this tidbit: "Satomobiles quickly became a must-have vehicle. With demand so high, Cabbage Corp created the Cabbage Car, a lower-cost compact car." This must obviously be referring to the cabbage merchant from the original series, right? I remember coming across a statement from the creators that while the cabbage merchant himself wouldn't appear in The Legend of Korra, his legacy would be present in some way.
I can't think of what, if anything, cabbages have to do with cars. Hiroshi Sato doesn't seem to resemble the cabbage merchant in any way, so I don't think they're blood relatives, either. However, when you check Hiroshi's description, there's this: "Hiroshi always dreamt big, so at 18, he convinced a wealthy banker to invest in the idea of automobiles for the common man. Before long, he was churning out Satomobiles in his first Future Industries factory. By the time he was 25, he had made his first million yuans."
Perhaps this mysterious banker is the cabbage merchant? (I'm guessing either his cabbage business took off after Team Avatar stopped destroying his product or he made a ton of money off of the Ember Island play.) Hiroshi is now 50, so the investment would have happened 32 years before The Legend of Korra starts or 38 years after The Legend of Aang ends. It's hard to tell how old the cabbage merchant was, but I think he might have survived that long.

The cabbage merchant used carts to transport his merchandise. The carts were usually broken by benders, so I suspect he may have invested some thinking into a faster and more durable means to sell his stuff. While that's a huge leap between carts and cars, the building blocks were there.

Mm, I hadn't thought of the Cabbage Cars as being used as a delivery service, that would be neat. Perhaps the compact cars for private use run on eco-friendly fuel as well, like our versions of the electric or bio-fuel. ...I just kind of hope it doesn't look like Cinderella's carriage, but with a cabbage instead of a pumpkin. Actually who am I kidding, that would be hilarious.
I'm glad to see that Cabbage Corp is how his legacy lives on though; I was wondering what Bryke was planning when they had said that during that old interview. A corporation is a pretty nice step up from merchant.

I'm so glad that the creators acknowledged the fans love of the Cabbage Merchant guy! I'm just hoping that there will be other little snippets that will make all the original Avatar squee with joy hahaha

I'm guessing the Cabbage guy finally figured out how to make a lot of money and used that base to fund other ventures in technologies. Honestly, I bet the Cabbage guy actually made his money in insurance why? Who better to sell a case for insuring your property against accidental damage?

I personally think that Amon is linked to the Cabbage Merchant somehow. Who would have a greater grudge against benders than him for all of the cabbage carts destroyed by benders. Most likely I believe that his family/company is funding the Equalist forces. I'm hoping that Amon is secretly him or his decedent just for a hilarious plot twist.
