Do you really think friendships can last more than one lifetime?

I hope I'm posting in the right place!
I have seen on a few times on a couple different sites (mostly fanfiction.net and tumblr) that people have seemed to reference Toph to Ummi. For some reason? I don't know a lot about this but was curious if anyone else had seen this or knew anything about it? They may be linked together because Aang saw Toph in the Swamp and Hue had said 'in the swamp we see people we’ve lost, people we loved ...' And possibly when Toph has asked Aang after learning about Roku's history 'do you really think friendships can last more than one lifetime' and Aang had replied 'I don't see why not.'
I really don't see how this could work out all that well as Toph is from the Earth Kingdom and an earthbender and Ummi was from the Water Tribe not sure if she was a bender or not.
But it is possible I suppose!
Thoughts, opinions? Any more info on this?

I kind of doubt that they are related since Toph comes from what seems to be a noble Earth Kingdom family and I doubt they would have any water tribe blood in their linage even that far back. (Although I suppose it isn't completely unlikely). But Aang settled the whole "people we've lost" thing in that episode by saying it was someone he was going to meet.
Also the friendship lasting more than one lifetime was referring to the Avatar (who is essentially the same person) being friends with the same person in different incarnations. Like Roku and Aang both being friends with Gyatso. I'm not sure if it would really be like the same friendship lasting more than one lifetime if it involved a descendant of the one of the people involved.

I wasn't thinking it made much sense myself and was wondering why I had seen it every so often. Glad I'm not the only one that doesn't think it makes sense. And I was just stating a few scenes they might have gotten this idea from. Thank you for your input!

You're welcome. It is definitely interesting that several people have come to that conclusion though.

Basically they said that toph is reincarnation of ummi 🤦 if u think it's impossible bc toph is an earth kingdom citizens and ummi is from water tribe, u basically said that aang is not reincarnation of roku since roku is from fire nation and aang is air nomad 🤦.
So the theory is kinda have evidence to back it up. Like swamp episode in book 2 and night mare episode in book 3. In swamp episode we've been told that swamp shows us the image of someone we love and we lost. But when it comes to aang, they only said it's someone he would meet in the future? Kinda strange isn't it? Unless toph is someone aang have been love and lost in his past. His past life. Remember avatar kuruk and spirit named koh? So koh steal ummi face. Ultimately trapped her spirit and kill her. In nightmare episode, we seen that in aangs dream when all his friends meet their doom, he see toph with no eyes. Like it have been stealed.
That's basically the foundation about this theory
