I've been wondering about him. And now we've been told he's supposed to be tall and handsome? Unless I've missed an announcement of his role, I have some ideas:
1) He is the leader of the anti-bending revolt 2) He's ONE of the younger leaders of the revolt 3) He's supposed to be Korra's romantic interest
Of course, the last two could both be true...
In relation to the ideas that he's a rebel leader of some sort, perhaps he's a non-bending descendant of Azula or Zuko? I mean, if Katara was the first waterbender in her family in a long time, perhaps the opposite is true and Mako is the first NON-bender in his family in a long time, which makes him bitter toward benders?
Is there anyone else who's willing to take a guess as to who he's supposed to be?

Hmm.... it's hard to guess without knowing how old Mako is supposed to be, but if his name is in honor of Uncle Iroh's VA Mako, then I would hope that he would be a good guy or a good mixed-gray guy. David Faustino's voice has a young sound to it, so maybe he would be a teenager or young adult. The Tall and Handsome comment makes me think that he might be misleading/silver tongued, and I would agree with the Korra romantic interest line of thinking. It would be interesting if he was with the anti-bending revolt though. He's up high on the VA list so he must be an important reoccurring character. Of course I would think that about Tenzin too, and he was at the bottom of the list. It's possible Mako might be with Korra's group though, assuming she has one like Aang did. Hn, if Mako is with the anti-bender movement, I'd place my guess on him being the son of the villain or the Lieutenant, assuming the Lieutenant is a bad guy. So I guess a Zutara-esque spin, to bring back the fans who felt jilted by Kataang. Maybe.

........Oh my God.
Horyo, you have blown my mind. If Mako is Mai and Zuko's son/grandson, I will laugh forever and ever.

Anything is possible this early on... I especially like the possible ship outcome of Maiko...

The possible outcome of The Ship I Cannot Name is one of the main reasons against me watching this show.
There are others...

Though you're entitled to your own opinions, I feel that's an awfully superficial reason.

The possible outcome of The Ship I Cannot Name is one of the main reasons against me watching this show. Since you said "possible outcome", I take it you have no issue with the definitely established shipping outcomes?

Though you're entitled to your own opinions, I feel that's an awfully superficial reason. I said there were others. I'm not too keen on the...what is it...'steampunk'...setting...or the mechanical modes of transport...I liked the freaky hybrid animals. Or the fact that NONE of the original characters are still alive. None of the information released so far has made me go 'ooohhh!!' The whole concept is kinda 'meh' to me. My opinion may change when I actually see it, but so far, I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to do so.

Why would he be the first non-bender when people have been born that way for years?
I also thought Katara was the LAST watebender in her tribe. Not the first.
But do expect Republic City to be extremely segregated as there's bound to be tenses between earthbenders and firebenders from the war. You just have a fifth element to the mix and that's non-benders in a big scheme of benders vs. non-benders.
>mfw I had this idea back when the original series aired. >implying I have a face.

I will admit that had actually come to mind and I considered including it in my speculation, but decided it was a bit too...fanficcy. I didn't say he would be the first non-bender, but the first non-bender born into his family. Same for Katara---only waterbender born within her family. Sorry if that was confusing.

So I guess a Zutara-esque spin, to bring back the fans who felt jilted by Kataang. Maybe. I could see this. It would be sort of interesting to watch Korra fall for the "villain" of the story, perhaps without even knowing the role he played in the conflict. I just hope it doesn't turn into the bad guy turning out to be good so as to not be too repetitive of Zuko.

I would like to see it inverted - her friend/lover/whatever turns to the dark side.

That would be pretty awesome too. It would be a nice play on the theme from ATLA that the bad guys aren't all bad and can change. Now the good guys aren't all good and can turn as well.

@ilz, Yeah, I would like to see some other character archetypes as well. They did really well with Zuko's transformation, so hopefully they'll be covering new ground instead of rehashing it. I would like to see it inverted - her friend/lover/whatever turns to the dark side. Ooh, that would be interesting. I kind of have trouble understanding how this would happen though. If the dude is close to Korra, then he would understand the benefits/history/etc of bending, right? So... whatever the anti-bending movement is really about, it would have to be even closer to him in order for him to turn away from Korra. Or a conflict of interest, maybe?
