I heard that Mike and Bryan said that the original series intended to be three seasons, but does this series have a planned ending or will they just keep making more as long as Nickelodeon orders them?

I'm not sure if anything has been said so specifically regarding LoK yet. Back when it was still just a single season, M&B mentioned in an interview that it would be a short mini-series. Then when another season was ordered, in a later interview they said that Nickelodeon was looking for... what's the phrase... self-contained(?) seasons, like the tv show '24.' Instead of there being a big bad or plot that takes a couple seasons to complete like ATLA, it would be just one season's bad guy or problem.
But whether for that first season if there was a definitive ending planned, or if it would be open-ended, I don't know. I think open-ended would probably work better for how the LoK situation is set up, but more will probably be said when it gets closer to airing, or after it airs and they give commentary on how/if things changed with the additional seasons to work with.

So Legend of Korra could go on as long as Friendship is Magic goes on?

Well...there's no approaching comet or war to be won in this one...there is no clear goal...so it could go on and on...

Agreed this is a different model of stories M&B are doing right now compared to the Tokien-esque style they adopted in the first series. The enemy is not as obvious as before and taking out a revolutionary movement is not as easy as defeating an army in the field. If anything solving the problems of Republic City might take a good while longer than just one season.
I just hope they do have an end planned in mind because I wouldn't want LoK to end up getting canceled for running past it's appeal after it has long jumped the proverbial shark.

Well...there's no approaching comet or war to be won in this one...there is no clear goal...so it could go on and on... This is what I was thinking. Since the show's plot was based on a everything taking placxe before an "big event", the first series felt like it had an ending. What's the new show's actual plot, or do we not have that info yet? Regardless, I'm excited for the new series (understated).

^I'd much rather the series have a grim ending than the show continuing to run way past what M&B had originally planned for it too. Many shows (not to mention animated series) suffer creatively because they pump out an endless amount of episodes.

I would also like a planned ending. I wouldn't want this to run on like certain animes where the quality just goes down the tube after too many seasons and crazy twists. I also just enjoy going through things with a "goal" of sorts in mind, I think it makes it easier to follow and actually more suspenseful in a sense too. I also wouldn't want Korra to run too long and overshadow the original ATLA. I like the idea of 2 seasons of 12-13 episodes or so.

I will say that after watching the first couple of eps, I feel like this series could end up being shorter than the original. Idk why, I just feel like maybe the story will wrap up sooner than Aang's. But I could be totally wrong.

Idk why, I just feel like maybe the story will wrap up sooner than Aang's. But I could be totally wrong. I think a lot of that could be because Korra had already mastered 3/4 elements, and is just learning the one last element. Aang, on the other hand, had to learn 3/4. If they wanted to make him learning the other elements remotely believable it had to stretch over the span of a couple seasons. If it takes Korra 2-3 seasons to master Air it might seem a bit... ridiculous.

Yeah, I think it's going to be more about the opposition from the non-bender revolution that will be the main plot. But I don't think it could stretch for a lot of seasons.

Yeah, I think it's going to be more about the opposition from the non-bender revolution that will be the main plot. But I don't think it could stretch for a lot of seasons. Even then, the main plot of the original series was ending the war/defeating Ozai, but Aang had to learn the other elements to complete it. Now, granted, pretty sure Korra could throw down a nice size of non-benders, but I think part of her learning airbending is to teach her to try and realize that not every problem is solved by using fists, especially since she's so hotheaded and ready to brawl. However, I digress; if they want to use the non-bending arc, I agree it won't last long, so something new will have to come up. I wonder how large this conflict will grow though; while a non-bender movement/revolution in Republic City can be large and change a lot of feelings, I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the size or graveness of a situation after the 100 Year War that included wiping out an entire race of people and decimated the South Pole. But I'm a little uncreative.

Well...there's no approaching comet or war to be won in this one...there is no clear goal...so it could go on and on... Serious concern. I'm hoping that the introduction of the Pro Bender games doesn't make the Avatar world turn into a tournament-style DBZ-equse mess o'crazy. Since Korra's story so far has minor parallels to a few versions of the early life of Siddharta Gautama, I could see Korra's purpose becoming one of redeeming a world still reeling from major war, genocide, and industrial boom. She was raised in isolation and seeing crime, homelessness, and public unrest (like Gautama seeing disease, death, and an ascetic) made her want to join the world against the wishes of her keepers. I imagine a story like that is necessarily open-ended. How do you fix society, provide for the poor and create utopia? Plenty of leaders all over our own world have tried to answer that question and failed. Maybe the writers will be learning along the way what does and doesn't work for Korra in her quest to redeem Republic City? With some romance and all thrown in for good measure.

I don't think Pro-Bending is going to turn it into an Avatar-version of DBZ (or even Pokemon or YuGiOh or whatever anime you choose) with just tournaments of fighting endlessly. I think it was a means to an end for introducing some new characters, like Bolin, Mako and eventually Asami .
