basic question: My kid is turning 13 this summer, he wants a facebook account.
I have one, but I find it boring, my husband HATES that type of stuff.
Considering the drama 'myface' creates, I don't like the idea much tho...
Then I think of the smart kids here on DH and think he is about as smart, why not....
It's a Momma problem...he is no longer a little kid...

That's tough - some kids use it properly and others get totally out of hand with it. I'm 18 and only recently joined, but a lot of my friends had them earlier. My cousin's that age and her activity always comes up on my news feed. It seems like all her and her friends do is join groups and take quizzes, so it's pretty innocent. As long as you make sure your son knows to make his profile private and not be friends with strangers, I guess he'd be fine. Show him stories like Phoebe Prince's so he knows the dangers of cyberbullying. But you're the mom and I'm a teenager. I'm already worried about this happening with my future kids though. DX

I would think of it as if your child asked you if they could get a forum account. The same issues and problems do occur but granted more personal. I think it all boils down to do you think think your son has the maturity to deal with the "dramas," be able to deal with potential creepos, watch out for scams/viruses, and have the maturity to communicate with others through this media. At the end of the day it is you the parent who should know if your child is at and if he is capable.
If you do decide that he is indeed able to handle the responsibilities I would make sure you have a talk with him about it beforehand. I especially would emphasize that there are something you just don't share and should keep out of the public eye like saying bad things about specific people or embracing / compromising photos. Those things have a habit of coming back to bite you like if you bad mouth your boss on facebook and he happens to be your fb friend. Or having drunk photos of you that can be assessable to any potential employers for jobs you may apply to in the future.

I'd say a Facebook account is safe, as long as you set up privacy options and monitor it.

Facebook's the way to go. I really enjoy it, and I've had mine since eighth grade. I use it primarily to share pictures, because I tend to be the photographer of the moment. It also keeps me in contact with friends I've met at band functions and camps. I'd suggest it, just monitor everything.

I see my DH faithful have spoken. I suppose I will retain privilege of having the password and approval of photos. ^_^ I guess I need to friend him...but I don't want my mother in law to see mine... LOL(maybe Hubby needs one, too.... ;D

@gran: www.formspring.meBasically a place where you can ask and answer questions. @splendi: It's okay. *hugs* Formspring is fun. I have a friend who updates like that too, and it's no big deal.
