So, ultimately, this dude's death lies on the collective conscience of a Board of Appeals who completely disregarded the testimony, life-saving testimony!, of a scientist who is basically a true expert on the subject of all things fire. That's the true moral of this story. If you're accused of arson and didn't do it, there's a 75% chance you're screwed, good lawyer and scientists or not. The truly sad part is not the fact that the guy died despite the fact that he was proven innocent, but members of the Board of Appeals don't care they killed him!
Simply unbelievable. If someone somewhere had overturned arson decisions before, and that based on the testimony of Dr. Hurst, then what makes Willingham's case so different? If they knew of Dr. Hurst and heard of the the big decisions he helped overturn, then surely they'd have known his testimony was the real deal and he just proved that guy's innocence. Some people, I really do tell you. It's stories like these that cause me to say what I do about people: How can I possibly have any faith in them when they don't bat an eye to learn they just screwed someone else over in a big way because they didn't feel like doing something? Humanism? There's nothing to believe in!
