Oh wow, ten pages. I'm not going to comment on anyone elses ideas because I currently don't have the time to read them (sorry). I haven't posted on this topic since the original announcement on November 5, and I'd just like to update you guys on the state of things in my area the LBGT Community in southern California. When the announcement first began, I didn't speak for a week. I wasn't the only one either, most of the GSA and nearly all of the LBGT students at my 3200 student school were silent. It was about a hundred of us. I had a piece of masking tape across my face that read "SILENCE", and a rainbow scarf around my neck. Recently there was a march at a liberal arts school a few blocks from mine, and I was tempted to go.. but of course it was during school hours and can't ditch. At my school Project Safe Zone is coming up. PSZ is a day to spread awareness about hate, predjudice, and acceptance. I plan on attending, and I'm pretty excited. I myself am bi (or at the very least bi-curious), and by Prop 8 I am a second class citizen should I choose to marry a woman. Stripping me of my rights or my trombonist friend of his, or my lesbian-couple friends of theirs is crazy. Why should we be any different for you guys? I don't think sexual orientation should be something we judge people on. I'm not going to look at you with a cynical, judging expression and say "You're straight?" What if being straight was taboo? Say you're applying for a job. A potential employer asks your sexual orientation and you reply straight. He double takes, then dismisses it. Your interview abbruptly ends. How do you think that feels? Unbearable. Someone doesn't accept you for who you are. People are people, we shouldn't disciminate. Race shouldn't be an issue for anything, it's an illusion, created, and neither should orientation. So that's what I've got to say.. Throw around what you will about it. Later, kids. :]

While I agree with what you're saying, Splendi, it's really up to the people to decide the laws, and there has to be a legal argument against Proposition 8 that doesn't rely strictly on a conflict of morals.

Off-topic for a bit here, but... Splendi, when you become of age, will you please run for president? Splendi 4 Prez I agree that no one should be attacked on the basis of their religious beliefs. However, if they try to use those beliefs to justify taking away peoples' rights, then they cannot be expected to escape criticism.

And just one thing to add to my post about what's going on in SoCal to educate: Today in my Freshmen Seminar class (an alternative to history that all freshmen take at my school. It combines history and the one semester of health required to graduate) a group came to speak. They're called "Glide" (http://media.www.fchornet.com/media/storage/paper921/news/2007/02/21/News/Glide.Strives.To.Promote.Unity-2733991.shtml), which stands for Gay and Lesbians Initiating Dialogue for Equality. Three speakers asked us to share any stereotypes or rumors we've heard (but not necessarily believe) about gays, lesbians, transgenders, and/or bisexuals. What came out was mostly negative, and they brought this to our attention saying this is what society teaches us. They then told us their [abridged] life stories, and there was pain that came with coming out in two of the three. It's just the social stigma that's placed around something invisible, and something that can almost never be changed. They said some fantastic things and made great points. After the class, I asked one, Bob, about his views on Prop 8. He told me he was heartbroken that his nearly 20 year marriage to his husband was being put on the chopping block by people that had no say in his choices. I agreed, saying that we were hoping this would be overturned by '10, if not sooner. I think if we bring the issue close to home, showing those who voted no what people are like, it would strike a chord. You can't tell if someone is gay just by looking at them, it's something inside. I'd like to see someone opposed to Prop 8 look me in the eyes and tell me I can't get married because I don't love the same way they do. And remember: Hitler was a vegetarian.

I don't have any problem with this, necessarily, but anyone saying the Supreme Court looking over Proposition 8 is unconstitutional is an absolute moron, considering the fact that referendums weren't enacted until the Progressive movement that also brought women's suffrage, and it isn't part of any Amendments. So the Supreme Court can look it over if they want.
I honestly think that marriage itself should be restricted to a strictly religious thing and just apply all the current legal rights to civil unions. Which would be universal.
And I do think a church should be able to exclude whoever they want. They can deal with the sh*tstorm themselves.

Relevant. Also, churches and other not for profit organizations that are under the umbrella of a 501(c)(3) status that lobby and exert influence in legislation for their causes need to have said status legally revoked. Section 501(c)(3) of US Code Title 26, which governs tax-exempt organizations, reads:
(3) Corporations, and any community chest, fund, or foundation, organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, testing for public safety, literary, or educational purposes, or to foster national or international amateur sports competition (but only if no part of its activities involve the provision of athletic facilities or equipment), or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals, no part of the net earnings of which inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual, no substantial part of the activities of which is carrying on propaganda, or otherwise attempting, to influence legislation (except as otherwise provided in subsection (h)), and which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.
edit: looking back, I see we covered this, however no-one pointed out the smoking gun in bold above.

If you weren't allowed to marry, what would you do? from where I am standing this weekend - not so totally unhappy...but that is just me all kidding aside, the social context of family has changed the last 30 years, I guess the laws ought to reflect that.

Actually, I support the Court's decision, though would have preferred it in my favor. They were stuck, there wasn't much else they could do, and this was the most feasible way; besides, people are starting to petition for another amendment that might nullify prop 8.
