Are we supposed to rinse it anymore? I've been brought up to rinse it, and make sure it's clean and edible, because sometimes little things get in there, but there are nutrients and minerals in the normal rice.
So are we supposed to? And how many of you do it?

Depends on the type and quality of the rice you buy. ie: Cheap White Rice = Lots of rinsing.

If I think about it. it's not really so much a matter of cleaning it, as these days it's pretty well screened (but it doesn't hurt) as to influence how the rice cooks up. More starch - what you rinse off) makes the rice more sticky. A plus if you eat with chopsticks but the western cook wants fluffy grainy rice (whatever fore, I don't know)
The nutrients are in the outer layer that is peeled off on the white rice. Parboiled or enriched rice is better than just white, brown rice better yet.

Rice needs a lot of rinsing. That's for sure.

I've also been told to rinse every time, but that NOT rinsing also has it's benefits. You're washing away the nutrients, but there's always possible chemicals, pesticides, a packaging dude who touched the rice after scratching his crotch...i'm not taking my chances.

Ehhh for me unless it's visibly covered in dirt I really don't wash rice before you cook it. I let the boiling water from rice cooker take care of cleaning for me

well, I think I found the answer: if you buy/cook white people rice you don't have to rinse. it's clean and ready for use, the little extra won't matter either way. If you buy the rice the people who know best eat like a million times a day, you gotta rinse. I just poured a cup of such rice in a pot (one cup, mind you!) and about choked on the dust, then stuff floated around the post as I added my water....so out in the colander, and off to rinse.... Oh, and then I burned it!

Hey, it's not like I burned water to make coffee....
Anyhow, I put said rice and water into a pot and placed it on the stove (as non asian people I don't eat rice that often and don't own a rice cooker - yet!) so I am planning on letting the water come to a boil, then simmer till the water does not sit above the rice anymore then put the pot into the warm oven (bout 140 degrees) for 20 minutes
Anyhow, getting sidetracked for step one - the simmering - is fatal tot he rice. And I am not sure if I want to go through the trouble and clean the pot...it's a very old one....

I use a pot too. Rice cookers are lame and slow.
Sometimes I burn it, but not to a considerable degree. Actually crunchy burnt rice isn't half bad.
