That thread was about a completely different aspect of the filter. And i accepted when it wouldn't be instituted because legitimate points were brought up. There will always be a way to insult people. I'm not looking for a way to insult anyone. That's why there's mods, to take care of the misuse of forum mechanics. If you say i can bypass the swearfilter and i'll be immune from repercussions sure, i'll drop it.

Grandi, you say you've stated very compelling arguments, but they really aren't all that compelling from where I sit. So does that negate all of our arguments? The whole "reta rded isn't technically a bad word, the use is all that is offensive, therefor when it is censored all that is lost is the inoffensive word itself, but not the offensive intent" argument is rendered meaningless because "from where you sit" it isn't a compelling argument. It's more compelling than any of the counter arguments I have heard so far. Honestly, how often do you use he word 'ret ard' in your posts on the forum. Is it really that much of a problem for you? It isn't, but to believe that because an issue is not a remarkably high priority it shouldn't be addressed is a poor policy. I feel that you're just trying to be argumentative in an effort to make the staff policies look stupid. I'd like to think that is not your goal, but do realize that at least from where I sit it looks like you simply want to argue with the staff. That's an unreasonable and belittling assumption that comes across as just a reason to disregard the arguments made in this thread. If you don't like the fact that you can't say mentally challenged person, I'm sorry. It was put in effect because people abused the word when it wasn't on the filter. Wouldn't it make more sense for the staff to simply punish or reprimand the users who abuse the word than have it just be censored? The word itself seems remarkably insignificant in comparison to the user's decision to use it, which holds little relevance to the existence of a swear filter. That was an entirely different topic. And I know enough 13 year olds who will be very offended when the word 'ret arded' is used against them. Well obviously. That's not exactly the issue being discussed. It's the word itself, not the word being used against them. The insulting usage of words like ret ard should be dealt with by staff.

*sigh* Okay. I don't sense this thread is going to a good place so I'll say what I think like that'll help.
I stand by the staff's decision to censor d**k. I rarely see it used as a name, and I would prefer that it be censored. It's a safety measure.
But I do see your points on the "ret*rded" censorship. I do. I can see that it still comes off as offensive with the censored word it's been turned into, however, I think it should still be censored - just with "dum dum" or "stupid". I'll be happy to change that to something more appropriate and less offensive - even if it's just censored with astericks, but you guys are right in the aspect that "dum dum" makes it just as bad.

I'm pretty sure this point has been made before but words like mentally challenged person, penis, vagina, twig, etc are not actually offensive.
They're only offensive if misused. The staff can and should be able to take care of any trolls misusing these words.
In fact, if someone is actually a troll it's doubtful they're going to let word restrictions stop them. So the point of censoring them to protect against trolls is practically moot.

Penis and vagina shouldn't be censored, I agree. Those are scientific terms, and waaay better than other options. I still stand against uncensoring dick because of my earlier statement. If I could find a way to make the name uncensored, but not the word when used in other ways I would, trust me, but I can't. So it has to be done. I will be happy to the retard, penis, and vagina discussion to the staff board and argue your points, because I agree with them. But I still stand by censoring dick, because, as you've made points on earlier s*** and f*** are curse words, and it is too when used in certain contexts. I'd prefer to avoid letting it be used in a bad context. I do appreciate your willingness to debate this. I didn't realize that some of these words were even censored.

Yeah the swear filter is pretty big, I'm not quite sure what all the censored words are myself.

I will personally bring this up as a discussion to the staff, and we will make a final decision. I'll stand by my points as you guys stand by yours, but I hope you're happy that I at least agree with you on a couple of things! Lol!

Yes, I can't thank you enough for looking through our opinions and I'm glad you agree. I'll be satisfied that the staff is at least considering these suggestions.

Thank you Goten! I'm glad that you took the time to read our arguments. Thanks for bringing it up in the SB, also. <3

You're welcome, but there's no need to thank me. It's my job.

THIS IS NOT A DOUBLE POST! Anyways. The staff has discussed this debate quite thoroughly, and we've made a few decisions. The words penis and vagina have been removed from the swear filter, on the grounds that you'll hear it on any medical show or Discovery channel BEFORE seven o' clock. They are scientific terms. Still, we would appreciate if you all would use them respectfully and as they should be used. If not, they go straight back in the filter. We agreed that "dum dum" was a horrible replacement for "ret*arded," and so, for the time being, we've changed it to "mentally challenged" until we come up with another solution - we're thinking of adapting Luthien's idea for that. For the moment d*ck will remain the same, simply because it is used as a curse word far more than a name. If you want to use it as a name, and you bypass it, we're not gonna ream you for it, but here, we're thinking better safe than sorry. Thank you guys for debating so strongly. You made valid points and you stuck to your guns. I appreciate a good debate. So that's what we've come up with. That's how we're leaving it for now.

Is it? That's rather bizarre. O.o OF course, ProBoards also censors words before forums even start up, so some of this stuff WE don't even know. XD
