Sorry if this has been brought up before but does anyone have any idea why the element symbols shown with the title of each episode at the begining is different from those for the respective element shown in the series itself? For the purposes of this discussion, Im taking the air symbol shown in the title for the joke episode "Forbidden Love" screened by Mike & Bryan at the Comic Convention as canon.

^ Thanks, ILZ. Sorry for starting the thread on the wrong board.
As a side note, I also noticed that the title boards for all the episodes are against plain white backgrounds except for "The Southern Temple" episode which was transparent and showed the sunrise coming through it. I wonder if theres any significance to that.

^^ Sorry, I dont read chinese characters but Ive just googled the words to see what the characters look like. The Fire symbol on the title card is definitely the chinese character for fire. The air symbol sort of looks like the second chinese character for air. I cant say that the chinese characters for water and earth look anything like the symbols on the title cards for the two elements but clearly you have the right idea.

Yeah, the symbols on the title cards are Avatar language (you know like what you see on scrolls and stuff) for that book's respective element. In case you have no idea what anything in the Avatar language means, when they do the "Water, Earth, Fire, Air" part in the beginning, the element symbols are in the background, behind the bender.

In the opening sequence when they show the respective elements AND the map showing the 4 respective nations, the symbols for the 4 elements and nations are shown like this: which seem based on the chinese characters for the same elements. However when Iroh draws out the symbols for the 4 elements in Bitter Work, (ie- Fire is the element of power, Earth, the element of substance etc), he drew this: EDIT: @shockwave. I see. So the insignias drawn by Iroh are completely made up unlike the symbols shown on the map and title cards which is why they look so different from each other? Yeah, I guess that makes sense though I wonder why Mike and Bryan didnt just stick with one set of symbols.

^^ I have to admit that I only recognise the bottom 2 insignias for "Fire" and "Earth" in your first picture. Ill have to go back and look out more carefully for the "air" and water" ones. Could you tell me which episodes they appear in?

I didn't notice that the symbols were different, you have a good eye as do alot of people here!
And one question: there was a fake eppie shown at the Comic Con? Did I misunderstand that? And if so where can it be found? I'd love to see it!
