Everyone always mentions it - the Avatar characters never act their true ages.
I searched through pages upon pages of topics and couldn't find anything about this, but I think it'd be worth discussing.
Why do you think the Avatar characters don't act their age and what age do you think they act?
Just for refrence:
Aang is 12. Katara is 14. Sokka is 15/16. Zuko is 16/17. Toph is 12. Azula is 15. Mai and Ty Lee are probably the same - 15.
Discuss.

We all know Nick lies.
I think Katara doesn't act her age because she had to fill the void left by a dead mother. It's difficult to grow up when there is a lack of a parent, sons and daughters usually take up that role giving them that motherly persona.
As for Aang, he's been under the guidance of Air Nomad philosophies so he isn't raised like regular children. he also has the Avatar state, so he knows the responsibilities that he must carry out.

Aang seems to alternate between extreme immaturity (like his emo temper tantrums in The Desert/The Awakening) and true maturity, like the ethical dilemma he faced in Sozin's Comet. He can't seem to make up his mind whether he's just a kid or the Avatar.

^Waiiiiit. Having lost his Bison, I can see why he would be upset and throw tantrums. I don't think that's a fair call D:
But the Awakening, yea, and partially in Ember Island. I guess that's what makes him unique as a character.

actually, azula is the only character who doesn't act her age to me (assuming mai is 16/17 like someone said) remember how immature aang was in season 1? he definately is a believable 12 year old. (speaking of age, why, in the 9 months the journey took did we never see a birthday?)

I don't think we started in the beginning of winter, probably the first few weeks.
So Sokka and Katara were born then. Aang was in the fall, and Azula/Toph weren't fully introduced until season 2. This is assuming their bdays are respective to their seasons.
Then again it IS a war, so there's not much time to celebrate.

I only meant the main characters. Each season the different nations have a greater baby boom than the others. I never said all.

I thought they all acted their ages perfectly, to be honest.

I felt the main characters acted their age too. Of course sometimes they can be quite mature for their age, but they're also in a war and/or had difficulties when younger (like with Katara having to take over the responsibilities after Kya died), plus they often had to fight for their lives or had an important part in dealing with the war. They had a lot of responsibility on their shoulders and that can really make kids grow up faster, or at least feel they need to act that way. But on times where they could/did act their age was sweet. (unless what they did was stupid *coughZukocough* but that equally was still acting their age.) But they couldn't be that way throughout the entire journey/series; situations often demanded them to be serious, and if they weren't then it would make it less realistic character-wise. I thought it was handled very well.

I always felt the characters were aged exactly one year too young, but that's really very minor. As a whole, I felt the characters were written as very believable teenagers (cept maybe Azula, but I don't mind that one).
One thing I had a problem with was how for most of the series Aang was a really well written, believable kid. Yet they would totally flip his personality around whenever something important was going on and he had to be serious, that felt poorly done to me. However, by Western Air Temple they had finally mastered getting a kid to be serious, but still be a kid.

I thought they all acted their ages perfectly, to be honest. But how many 12-year-olds would really go through the ethical dilemma in Sozin's Comet the way Aang does? My 12-year-old cousins would probably be like "OMGZ, blood!!11!!!one!! SWEET!"

^How many 12 Year olds have the power to manipulate air, have the ability to go into an all powerful all wise state, and how many people have the responsibility of handling the End of the Earth?

Zuko IS 17 now. Sokka and Suki are 16 now too, remember its been nearly a year since the series start. Rest seem right.
