So there was a lot of questions about the lion turtle like...what the hell was it, why was it so wise, and how did it just make aang "disappear"? So I thought about how earlier in the series we've found out that Badger moles were the original earthbenders, sky bison's were the original airbenders, and dragons were the original firebenders. Well my idea is the lion turtle was the original avatar. Thoughts? I do not think that it was the original avatar.

I think that the lion turtle is a type of creature known as a "great old one". If you've read any H.P. Lovecraft (the Cthulu Mythos), you'll know what I'm talking about. Basically, they are creatures that are far, far, FAR older than humanity. They are far more complex/evolved than we are, and are essentially immortal. What it told Aang was that "In the era before the avatar, we bent not the elements, but the energy inside ourselves." Essentially, before the elemental bending disciplines were created, there were benders of "spirit", or "quintessence" -- the element behind all elements. Aang is probably the first human being in the Avaverse to ever do it, and it probably creates an entire new dimension to the avatar spirit and bending in general. Who knows -- maybe in future series, we may see "spirit bending" or something like that. -- Spiritbender but the lion turtle didnt look remotely like a squid...plus you would expect cthulhu and his ilk to be helping ozai and not aang...

At least it's definitely the source of all waterbending. They lost their bending when Zhao killed the moonspirit.

I think the Lion turtle was in the era before the human race. I beleive that there was more but something happened like how the dragons went almost extict meaning only a few are still alive. P.S. Lion Turtles can also go on land if you didn't know remember in the library when Aang was like Look at this LION TURTLE and it was on land. P.S. Airbenders rule

Qustion about the Lion Turtle's tattoos. They look somewhere between the airbending symbols and the earth symbols to me. Anyone else wondering about their significance?

^^ So Zuko said. I doubt that lion turtles were ever as plentiful as Dragons though. They predated the Avatar. Perhaps they predated all bending forms as they are commonly known at the time of the series. Perhaps the tatoos on the lion turtle's bodies are the precursors for the bending symbols seen at the time of the series.
