Unfortunately, Viacom is too paranoid. Most of us do not put up full episodes on the Tube but even fan made content will not make Viacom happy. They just don't want any of their properties to be on the Tube. Period. Free publicity to them equals what they believe is lost money to them. I can't even imagine Viacom monitoring every single music video just to see how much the view count compares to the TV viewings.. Oh wait. Let's see Viacom monitor Coppa's Puppet Benders!! And it's unfortunate that M&B do not have the control beyond the marketing of their own creation. Otherwise, everyone would roam with a fresh breathe of air on the Tube with Avatar MVs. Thankfully, there's other shows to make MVs on. Not just Avatar.

It seem people here are more paranoid like Viacom
Point is Viacom dosen't want to be part of youtube...problem is youtube is now becoming a "wal-mart". there sueing google because viacom knows google can stop this but there being laxs on enforcment...I think people need to read more of the linked artical before making the already know quick judgement.
I also laugh at the notion of Free publicity...if that the case why are rating down for televison or why newspapers having a tough time selling paper.
Moral of the story...place "your work" on other video sites.

I switched to MegaVideo a long time ago. It has some pretty good quality videos, and almost every show I watched online I can find the whole series on MegaVideo. Part of the reason is my parents don't allow me to go to youtube. (They're weird, I know.) www.megavideo.com/

I think most...if not all...of us support them in the uploading of full episodes...it's the AMVs and parodies that we feel they're getting a little pedantic over.

^^Yep, fan vids are just free advertising for them. I don't think Viacom gets the whole "free advertising" thing. But anyway, my friend gets most of her vids through that bit torrent stuff. My computer is stupid and won't download even the program for it, but she gets whole seasons, movies, the works. If Viacom is gonna go after Youtube they should realize that there are MANY other places that share full length eppies. I don't like the fact they are just picking on one source.
But I do agree, it is copyrighted stuff, and full length vids, although nice, are wrong to post, they need to lay off the fan vids. I love watching them and rarely are they ever made from one eppie. Jumping back and forth is cool, it shows everyone not familiar with the show how cool it really is! I think Viacom is just being pissy, for the most part.

The AMVs and such are still using their footage. If they let people use and upload the video from their shows, it hurts their claim to the copyright.

Again..I laugh that this concpet of "free advertisement" it the same arguement that is used to avoid paying musicians for there music on the radio...now you can avoid the radio and just the artist myspace. I mean if this free advertisment works...why are there lower ratings on television in general or less circulation of newspapers.
I also laugh that apprently Fan videos make fans?...and yet most of the stories I hear about are how users like in this site came to be, most of there stories orginate from watching television, not the internet. Heck I wonder how many users became of fans of this site first and then avatar second. Heck I became a fan of a "Scrubs" by first watch television and then moveing on the net and looking at user-created material.
Point of this is Viacom dosen't want to be part of youtube...So google is trying to get rid of any videos that have images owned by them....The class-action lawsuit between google and viacom is that Viacom trying to prove that google is beening lenient on there enforcment of copyright matrial and hides it actions by claiming there protected by Digital Millennium Copyright Act. I laugh that people think viacom is going after fans and yet Viacom has contracts with other video sharing users site like Joost...it just choose not to partcipate with google/youtube.

I know several people who came to be fans by seeing some homemade fan vids, it does happen.
Adds on tv are much more suitable for getting people to watch your show, but when you don't see anything hyping it up, you have to wonder. Nick is responsible for advertising and if they'd do a better job, maybe they'd have their viewers. As I have said I do know a few people that were intrigued by what they saw on fan vids and became fans.
Maybe people are interested, and they go to the "other" sites to see eppies because NICK DOESN'T SHOW THEM ON TV, much less advertise much so people know when it's gonna be on. Like I said one of my friends became a fan when she saw a fanvid, and then went to a bit torrent thingy and downloaded all of the first season. I think that happens quite a bit more than we choose to believe. There are way too many fans out there for the show to have the rating and viewers it does. Something just doesn't add up, I tell ya.

I find it funny that your arguement gose from Several to few and then one of my friends.
Even with that example you gave...most still become fans by watching television. I mean how did you became of a fan of avatar dragonflly...

Certainly many (if not most) people become fans by the tv. I'm not about to argue that. However, I also know people who have first seen parody vids, fanart, fanfiction, amvs and have then said, "That looks cool, I'm going to check it out." -& they've become fans of the series. I've known people who have read many fanfics and have watched amvs of a series before they've bothered checking it out.
I'm just speaking from personal experience but I think it happens more often than one would think.
