Ever notice how one bad comment can spoil the whole lot of them? Ya no kidding. And I would think infection would be very rare. I wish I was one of those lucky folks who was born without them.lol

I had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out several years ago because of my braces. Basically what happens is that you go into an room much like a regular dentist's office, and they give you some type of anesthesia that knocks you out within 30 seconds or less. Then you wake up in a different room with a mouthful of cotton balls and no inhibitions at all (apparently, right after I woke up I was hitting on the guy next to me, who was still out cold from the anesthesia). Recovery takes about a week, and I'm not gonna lie, it does hurt, especially if you end up with dry sockets >_< But on the bright side, you get to eat Jell-O and pudding for days on end! =3
Edit: By the way, once they remove your wisdom teeth the cavity in your gums where they used to be fills up with blood. If that ever empties out then it's EXTREMELY painful and is the "dry socket" everyone keeps referring to.

I'm hoping I don't get dry socket that would suck.lol I went the the appraisal and I was told I had several options for anesthesia. They gave me options like a local or a general anestic and I made sure they knew I want to be totally knocked out no being awake for me.lol I don't know anyone in their right mind who would chose local anesthesia (like a shot in the mouth) over being asleep. I don't wanna see my teeth comming out of my mouth.lol

The best part about it was that the poor guy wasn't even conscious!! xD As long as you don't drink from a straw or slurp, then you shouldn't get any dry sockets Considering that they smash each wisdom tooth with a tiny hammer and then scrape the pieces out, yeah, you really wouldn't want to be awake during that

Uh, two question concerning dry sockets;
1. If they fill up with blood, what about the top wisdom teeth? 2. How are we suppose to drink liquids; chug it?

I just got all 4 my mine removed a few months ago. I honestly didnt have that hard of a time. But to (try to) answer you questions the blood clots over the holes where your teeth were. Its just sucking through a straw my be enough pressure to open up the hole again. (its just like what a scab does) You want to keep that clot there because if it opens up then you have some bone and nerve endings exposed. But if you just do what your dentist says and you'll be fine. And you probably dont want to eat right after. I tried to eat some ice cream only to have it slid right back out of my mouth and all over my shirt. This amused my mother to no end. And i have no memory of leaving the dentist office lol. I guess some nurses put me in my moms car. But i came to on the interstate back home though apparently i hadnt stopped talking after leaving i just have no recollection of what i said. -_-;; Advice for pain-just take your pain meds on time even if your not hurting yet because that hurt will come and you dont want to be unprepared.

oh, but you will
I got my wisdom teeth taken out in sets. 1st time on my right side, 2nd on my left. 1st time I had a dental student take them out, and yeah, it was very weird, and painful, and funny, because i was the "test student, lol. but luckily, no infections, and by day two, believe it, i was eating pizza w/ crushed red pepper. 2nd time was just a replay of round one, just that i ate soup the whole week since they did had to open me up to get the tooth out, because i guess it was still "in there".
overall, i'm glad they're out, no more headaches!

^ Some people don't get wisdom teeth and others get them halfway. You never know.

It's one of those things that, of course it's not going to be a great expeirience, but you have to get it done. I think probably the majority of people have to get their wisdom teeth out.

Here is my story. It really doesn't have to deal with any wisdom teeth being pulled out but it ends up allowing them to grow in. ^_^
In 8th grade, I had to get a moller pulled. It literally was nearly gone. Only one side of it was left. I was in so much pain. I went to the dentist, they numbed me up and started to pull it. But here is the thing that made this entire situation horrific. For some reason I am immune to the effects of Novocain (Yes it is possible.) They gave me EIGHT shots of it. 2 in my roots of my half way pulled out tooth. 3 nurses and my mom had to hold me down. It was so painful. I never even numbed up. Oh my god how much pain that was. I was screaming bloody murder. Then, when I was done, I went out and all the kids were crying because they heard my screaming. Then to top it off I puked blood in front of them. XD Poor kids. But this left a huge hole in my gums where a wisdom tooth would grow it thus me not having to get that one pulled. But there are 3 more. D:

How does that make me sick? Your lucky I didn't add in that when I got the shot in the roots I felt the blood squirt in my mouth.

hahaha.
well, think about it. the reason humans (originally) had wisdom teeth was because we had a very 'hard' diet (like nuts and stuff) and we would lose a molar or two. So our bodies adapted to make 4 more (2 on each side). and especially when the body has lived long enough to have had endure this diet.
dental student here hahaha
