Im almost finished with this book... and I really dont want to.
That is the power of stephen king. he is a master of tragedy, horror, and fear. and he is a master, of those things because of how powerfully he contrasts it with Joy, happiness, hope, and love.
Other authors might strive to surprise you, or gross you out, but King never forgets his responsibility to make you love his charcters... he makes the sand castle as beautiful as he can, so that you want to cry when he smashes it into the ground.
for example, in Duma Key, the story starts with Edger Freemantle barely surviving a horrible acadent. which takes his arm and, at least temporally, his sanity. he then moves Freemantle to Duma Key, gives him godly artistic talent, and a excellent life. His family comes to visit him, and you are so happy for how well his family has turned around, that you forget that Stephen King does not specalize in happy Endings.
then you get a line like "she went in through the sliding doors. She turned back once, smiled, and waved goodbye. I wish with all my heart I could have seen her better... because I never saw her again."
and then it just hits you like a ton of bricks. and you know that the shit is about to hit the fan. the thing you have been waiting for, only you dont want it any more, your scared, as if by reading on, you will kill the characters you love.
has anybody else yet read Duma Key? or want to talk about any other SK books?
