My favorite book is Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. I'll never get tired of reading it. I also enjoy the sequels, Racso and the Rats of NIMH, and R-T, Margaret, and the Rats of NIMH. Usually I don't like it when another author picks up someone else's storyline (In this case it's Robert C O'Brien's daughter, I believe), but even though the writing style is very different in these books, I love them almost as much. Another favorite is The Little Gymnast by Shelia Haigh. It's a very well-written and inspiring story.
My least favorite: Frankenstein. Couldn't even finish the first couple of chapters, it was so mind-numbingly boring.

Science Fiction: Caves of Steel by Iaasc Asimov, also Robots of Dawn from the same series. Classic Literature: Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, and A Tale of Two Cities (Sorry Firerajah, but I loved it like crazy. I have to say, though, it did have a really slow start, but boy, the ending sure made up for it! I get teary-eyed just thinking of it.... ) Romance: Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell Young Adult: Jacob Have I Loved by Kathrine Paterson Other: Animal Farm - Perfect down to the tiniest of details.

Favorite books: ** To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee ** The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson (very harsh -- pulp fiction murder plot -- be warned) ** LoTR by Tolkein ** The Thief, The Queen of Attolia, and The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner (a trilogy - YA - very good) ** A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole (long but great) Those are my favorites I've been thinking about rereading lately. I'm sure there are others back in the stack. Good luck finding something both edifying and enjoyable!

I had forgotten about Gone with the Wind!! Extremely well written, interesting historical perspective.
@ RandomPokes: you are so right! The characters are realistic, but in the end you really don't like any of them. I totally HATED India Wilkes and Sue Ellen.....
Beauty by Robin Mckinley is my best friends favourite novel, and it really is beautifully done. It does a great job of bringing the whole Beauty & the Beast story to life, and makes it fresh and believeable.
EDIT: Two other books I had forgotten about (both are young adult fiction):
True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, which is one of the only books I have read that had a strong, very young female protagonist. This book also has great (but totally believable) plot twists.
The From Mixed up files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler was really good too. I've never read anything quite like it ever since. Though, I have to say, it always was my personal fantasy to live in a museum...

Ohhh, I have so many. LOL XD
The Dave Pelzer series is honestly the most inspiring series I have ever come across. I have always been taught not to judge somebody based on shallow facts, for we NEVER know the whole story just by looking at somebody... This series really emphasizes that. It really opens your eyes as to how cruel the world can be, this story is 100% true and coming from a 100% REAL person. It's a great read. And even if you don't like biographies or find the series utterly boring, I strongly advise you read it to get a taste of a world outside of your comfortable rooms talking on your expensive cell phone and browsing the internet on your lap top. This kid had to work his Equus asinus off just to survive. Which is why it makes me so dang mad to see people complaining when they have so many great things going on in their lives. Read it.
The Harry Potter Series, awww. It ended! dang JK Rowling. I stil hold a place in my heart for this series, though. I grew up with Harry! And we all knew how it would end even before it did! "...And Harry Potter and all of his wizard friends went STRAIGHT to hell for practicing witch craft!" Aw, Simpsons. *Chuckles*
The Twilight Series is of course my new favorite series. Some ideas are a bit cliche, but over all it is an entertaining read and I can never put the books down! The author is a very down-to-earth person, and that shows through her writing. And hey, I can totally relate to the whole I-Moved-From-A-City-To-An-Utterly-Small-Town-and-For-Some-Odd-Reason-People-won't-STFU thing. LOL!!! It's a story anyone can relate to, really. A real life girl...bored...practical. She ends up in a fairy tale. This idea has been done, sure, but it's amazing none the less. Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse rock my socks off! Fo srs. <3
Those three (Or, technically Fifteen) books are my favorites, haha. xD

Atonement by Ian McEwan. I finished it sometime last week, and I'm still in awe of the entire book. It was incredible. Definitely not a children's book, but it was insanely good. Too great for words.

I love, as in, LOVE, Great Expectations. I've always been partial to the "Century Kids" book series, but they're just fun little books, nothing groundbreaking. For awfulness...I'd go with fanfiction.net

LoTR by J. R. R. Tolkein
Just about every Stephen King book I've read
Icebound, Intensity, and From the Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz
The Legend of Drizzt series by R. A. Salvatore
Hamlet, King Lear, and Othello by William Shakespeare
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee (read it three times in high school)
Bless the Beasts And Children by ... uh... Yeah, I don't remember
And my least favorite book, I have two: Black Boy by Richard Wright (I'm not that big on non-fiction) and Catcher In the Rye by J. D. Salinger (there's another thread about books around here, one about books we dislike. Check that one for why I dislike CItR).
