I loved Starcraft's story and i've been waiting... >_< 10 years for the continuation. They've already stated that the game play will be similar to SC1 (ie fast and furious game play with large armies)
They'll have a lot of the Korean pros helping them with the balance issues so you can bet it's gonna be asymmetrically balanced like crazy.

As much as I like the announcement of the sequel, I still don't like the way they're going to stick to the same resource gathering mechanics (mining crystals and gathering vespene gas). It's a bit old fashioned compared to acquiring resources through capturing strategic points on the map. Also the lack of infantry being trained in squads, a feature used in Rise of Nations, Company of Heroes etc. does bother me (alright, I admit Company of Heroes raised my expectations on what an ideal RTS should be).
From the gameplay trailer, I was a bit disappointed about the lack of unit interaction when infantry units enter combat. The Marines just stood there shooting away while the Zealots were attacking them at such close range. It would be neat if they did try to block, get to cover or keep their distance from the blades in an attempt to fight off the Zealots. That would add a lot to the immersiveness. I hope there will be more armor and damage types incorporated into the game and lessen the damage of small arms fire against vehicle armor.
I'm not trying to diss Blizzard and its too early to know all the gameplay features but I hope they'll make something that is more than just the same and not just to please the fanboys. Besides, its neat if Blizzard gets to invigorate the RTS genre.

You could easily say that Starcraft 2 is being made for South Korea where it's basicly a national sport with media coverage on par with football in America. Their pro starcraft players have major endorsement where they appear on cans of Pepsi and bags of Doritos. Hell they even have TV coverage of SC games complete with 2 commentators. All that being said, there would be no way Blizz would try to do something revolutionary to the SC franchise game play, cause then it wouldn't 'feel' like starcraft. I read one article where one of the korean press memebers was concerned about unit balance in SC2 from the gameplay footage they released, even though Blizz clearly stated that it was a Protoss focused demo real.

I read one article where one of the korean press memebers was concerned about unit balance in SC2 from the gameplay footage they released, even though Blizz clearly stated that it was a Protoss focused demo real. Starcraft was one of those games that kept me playing (whether single or multiplayer) for years. But over the course of time after being exposed to the new ideas and concepts brought by Rise of Nations, Ground Control, Dawn of War and Company of Heroes, I don't want to see a game that is just the same as its predecessor. They might not drastically change it but then its been like 9 years since the release of the first Starcraft. There are people who also want something that is fresh so I fear Blizzard will just keep it the same just for the sake of pleasing the Koreans (or for franchise's sake). Its sad if there aren't making any revolutionary changes but I do hope my fears will be unfounded. But then again, if revolutionary features can't be implemented, it'll be neat if they add some subtle changes which increase the immersiveness of the game.

For all the starcraft junkies out there, I suggest pick up the new SC novel. Starcraft: The Dark Templar Trilogy: First Born (book 1). taken from www.blizzplanet.com/content/683/I picked it up over the weekend and it's a pretty good read. We get a very small amount of new info (but it's a HUGE impact) and the fleshing out of the history of the protross retold in quasi-dream-flashback sequences.

It's a bit old fashioned compared to acquiring resources through capturing strategic points on the map. But what about the Tiberium? CnC is about collecting Tiberium, and fans still love it today. what's wrong with collecting resources anyway? it would make the game different if the player had to learn everytime. i dun think ur getting the concept of the RTS here..
