Record of Lodoss war is one of my favorite OVA's, it is the lord of the rings of anime. Lodoss is a very strong and powerful anime, it is a visionary masterpiece that would have given Frodo a run for his money. Set in a alternate earth, it is the story of a young warrior named Parn who by a chance of fate gets caught in a terrible war.
The story goes like this: Long ago there was a war of gods, the armies of light combated the armies of darkness. The war was terrible, most of the gods died and faded. In the end there were only two gods left, Marfa godess of creation and Kardis godess of destruction. Thier final battle caused a catastrophy by splitting a contenant apart, one now known as Alecrast and the other Lodoss. Lodoss is now referred to as the accursed island. Many years have passed and a new war has come about, the kingdom of Marmo has declaired war on the other nations and in thier quest for domination they had destroyed many lives. But now Parn and his allies are now in thier way, both directly and indirectly. The war of heroes is now underway and death and destruction lay in thier wake.
It is ca fantasy series a decent one, even for a 13 episode OVA, its spin offs are also good and the mangas are wonderful.

Eh i bought into the hype for RoLW but I found the action very lacking. Everything else was decent. I really disliked how they used a lot of panning shots for action sequences. The TV series while have one of the best openings ever, was a huge let down.

Well Lodoss does have a fairly decent storyline though, plus some of the characters are likable. Deedlit is my favorite from the series.
As for the series, chronicles of the heroic knight I am mixed about it. In many ways its good but in others its not, what should be noted is that it is in an alternate timeline to the OVA. But yes its opening theme is one of the greatest in anime history, its theme song ranks right up there with cowboy bebop's real folk blues.

Yeah Deedlit was a good character, I did like how they animated her elemental magic. The berserker guy was pretty cool for the whole 10 sec they actually animated some of his action.

Record of Lodoss War was based upon what was essentially a Japanese version of Dungeons & Dragons called Sword. And the OVA is actually the condensed storyline. The TV series is actually the more canonically accurate storyline, so really the OVA is the alternative story. So for the most canonical experience watch the OVA to the point where Ghim confronts Karla the Grey Witch and then switch to the TV series for the remainder.
Interestingly enough, the creator of RoLW also created a light-hearted comedy set in the same world, but on the continent of Alecrast - Louie the Rune Soldier, which is the story of a magician with the brawns and brains of a warrior who prefers to fight using his fists and not his magic, and he joins up with three girls who fill out the rest of the standard D&D party - warrior, priest, thief.

I have the TV series on DVD. It was one of the first "upper level" animes that I watched. I like the story line, but like Attonbitus said, the action scenes could be better. Over all, it's one of my favorite animes. And I love the opening and ending themes.

I watched Louie the Rune Soldier, it was alright. Had more action and some decent humor but suffered from almost zero character growth.

The manga I thought was better, but I think it was cancelled after Vol.4. But in the manga it actually strongly hinted even early on that Louie was actually a bastard son of the King of Ohfun, especially when High Priestess Jenny was talking to Melissa about how the young king was a womanizer who would get into drunken fist fights.

I just read the first book of the Lodoss War/Grey Witch manga and found it quite enjoyable.
I'm planning to get the OVA sometime soon.

I flipped through the manga, but it seemed too....graphic for me.

Lodoss is a really great anime, although the OAV far outranks the TV series, save for the theme song. It's not as detailed as The Lord of the Rings, but in other ways is exactly what I want in a LOTR-type fantasy story. Elves, dwarves, humans, and even berserkers!

^Funny you should say that, I was also thinking how much ROLW is a lot like LOTR. Hell, it pratically IS an anime version of LoTRs. XD
And yes, "Kiseki no Umi" is FTW. ("Hikaru no Suashi" is kickin' too)
