And Kaneda, will you quit spoiling these things for me?! SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT In Passion of the Christ, Jesus dies. ^ Aw, next you'll be telling me the big ship sank in that Titanic movie. ...It didn't, did it? Dude, I'm just not caught up on my manga. Um, villains, yeah... I like how Miyazaki doesn't usually have a clear-cut "bad guy" ~ most characters get equal respect and consideration, and if they're bent on making disappointing choices, at least their motives are clear and they're not just paper villains. The characterization also tends to be fluid, and they seem to cross the boundaries from 'good' to 'evil' quite easily.

Yah, Miazaki's villains are great characters but not great villains.

I've never really fallen in love with a Miyazaki villain. The protagonists I love, though.

They need real evil characters that doesn't turn good now. Its not that they turn good, theyre just ambiguos. A perfect example of a Miyazaki villain is Eboshi. She doesnt turn good (excluding the last two minutes), she even kills the forest spirit. But the whole time she has pretty good justifications for her actions. She cares deeply for her people and greatly improve their quality of living. But she's still the antagonist. Thats why i didnt like Castle in the Sky. Muska was a shallow character. Look at Spiderman 2 and 3: Dr. Octopus = good villain Venom = crappy villain Thats because Dr. Octopus is more Miyazaki style, where as venom is cliche shallow villain style.

Exactly ~ it was actually Eboshi I had in mind when I wrote that. Her categorization depends on the observer's definition of what 'good' is. And who knows ~ maybe her actions were necessary for the metamorphosis the Forest Spirit knew he had to undergo to live on in a modern, industrializing world? And here we are spoiling it again for anyone who may not have seen it yet. And eh, maybe you've gotta have your 'Castle in the Sky' before you can move on to better things. Besides, paper villains aside, I love the beautiful scenery of Pazu's village, which makes it worth watching for me ~ gives me goosebumps everytime. For his upcoming film, Ponyo... wonder who will antagonize, if anybody? Maybe it will just be a representation of something inevitable, like 'Time' or something.

THere are screenshots allready? Well, it's a sketch... not sure where I got that one. Here, I think: www.ghibliworld.com/news.html#0204Like I said, (and to stay on topic ) I'm not picturing any real villains for this one, like Kiki's or Totoro. We'll see.

I see a character that looks like a possible antagonist. He looks like some kind of magician or something. (also the little kid is uber kawaai with a bottle on his head)

It's supposed to be a Little Mermaid type story. I'll go make a different thread about it, since this is 'favorite villains.' The old one is not only several pages back, but we didn't have any info on the movie yet ~ so there's no discussion in there. For Ponyo, I hope the magician-looking guy doesn't turn out to be some Ursula type. I trust Miyazaki to make a villain with better depth.
