We had a thread for shounen manga (it was actually a Shonen Jump thread) but I don't think we've had one for shoujo.
I personally like shoujo more than shounen manga. Shoujo manga tends to have less volumes to buy yet still have good plots. The art is also more detailed than that of shounen. Yuu Watase, one of my fave manga-ka, is a very popular shoujo artist.
Sadly, I haven't been able to get many shoujo, since they're rated 16+ most of the time. But of the ones I've borrowed, Ceres and Alice 19th are big faves. I really want to read Hana Kimi. I need to get my hands on it.... My friend also said W Juliet was pretty good.
WHAT ARE YOURS??

^ I actually think a lot of the art is better than some shounen styles. Plus, being a guy, I wouldn't expect you to be a big fan. ;-D

O.o Well, here are mine: Fushigi Yuugi Ayashi no Ceres D.N. Angel* Alice 19th CardCaptor Sakura Appare Jipangu! I.N.V.U.* MARS* I would have sworn that there were more.... But that's all I can think of for now. *Those manga are licensed by TokyoPop in North America, and TokyoPop doesn't label their manga by if it's male oriented or female oriented. They're labeled as "drama" or "romance", so they're the closest to "shoujo" in this case.

what exactly is shoujo?

There are two primary categories when describing manga: those that are aimed at a male oriented audience and those aimed at a female oriented one. Male oriented manga/anime is called "shonen" the Japanese word for "boy" and those for females are called "shoujo" which means "girl". Then there's that category which is kinda in the middle....... Like DragonBall in Fushigi Yuugi form... Oh! I know what it's called! InuYasha! (Come on now people you know it's true. ) So, shonen manga has more action and violence and less romantic subplot, while shoujo manga has- well, can have an equal amount of action and violence (possibly more ) but has 20 MILLION times much romance which is what the entire plot is revolved around. And that concludes Spirit Mage's brief summary of Anime/Manga: Part 1 (Shojo vs. Shonen). ^_^

Actually, there are a lot of manga classifications, but the most well-known are in fact shonen and shojo, as Spirit Mage explained. Here's a list of all manga types. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga#Classification_of_MangaIn fact, drawing styles even differ. Shojo has more large, sparkly-eyed characters with flowing features and more fanservices for females, such as more attractively drawn males. Shonen has more attractive females (like the womens with large breasts) and are less flowery and sparkly.

^Lol yeah. I meant to say that genres such as action, sci-fi, fantasy and horror can be aimed at male and female oriented audiences. Like, a manga can be horror but is mainly for girl readers and a manga can be fantasy but mainly for boy readers. bleh. shoulda explained it better. >< Yeah I can honestly say that there are more attractive males in Shojo than Shonen (cept for in Rurouni Kenshin. lol. ). I have no comment on the females.
