Most of you have probably already heard this, but it's news to me and I didn't see a thread for it already, so I thought I'd make one and put up a few links: The Frodo Franchise ~ gives an overview of the events leading up to the decision, including some background on the legal struggle: www.kristinthompson.net/blog/?p=159The Hobbit Movie blog: www.thehobbitblog.com/I'm not usually a fan of destroying otherwise perfectly good literature and bringing it to the silver screen, but if it brings the story to an audience who wouldn't otherwise see it at all, and if it can be done sensitively and well, then I am interested in seeing how such a project could turn out. I guess we will see how the project progresses ~ apparently the first movie will simply be Hobbit material, and the second will tie that storyline to LotR, using material from The Silmarillion and Tolkien's notes.

I am really excited to see more material from Tolkien's universe making it to the big screen. I think it's hysterical that New Line Cinema was putting Jackson off, until they realized that he brings in the dough.

I read about this on IGN, I'm soo excited, I almost thought it was a joke. I'm approved of the way Jackson handled the LotR trilogy. I wouldn't want any other director doing it. But of course the books are better.
Question to you Blue Chibi, did you not like the LotR movies?

I'm really looking forward to the Hobbit movies! It's nice to see Peter Jackson is working on them.
I should go back and read the Hobbit once more...

Oh God I hope they're not long! Because if they're too long, then I don't want to see them!

I have to admit that I was so happy when I heard about this. Peter Jackson did a good job with LOTR, and I was so disappointed when New Line first announced it was going to do The Hobbit without him. I have to confess, I think the guys over at theonering.net constantly harassing New Line had some impact. Jackson's so steeped in Tolkien's mythology now that The Hobbit almost *has* to be done by him (and I should mention his trusty writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who wrote some of LOTR's best scenes). Plus, Hugo Weaving and Sir Ian McKellan have said that if Jackson's on board, they are too. And that makes me happy because seriously - Ian McKellan is Gandalf! And are they really going to include Silmarillion material, too? Because seeing some of the Beren and Luthien (*wink*wink*) story on film would be awesome.

I can't believe I hadn't heard about this before. But... Jackson's not directing, just producing. Which is a shame, but still as long as he's involved it should be awesome.
