A while back on another forum, before the airing of The Fortuneteller, I asked whether Aang's allegid monk status would prevent him from seeking romance. Aang has since then shown where he stands on the issue by being the worst monk ever, moving up to the ranks of Kuririn and Miroku. (that Omi from Xiaolin Showdown seems suspect as well) Nevertheless, do you think there will be a time where Aang must make a decision one way or another concerning this? Or do the airbender monks actually allow marriage and children, unlike their real-life cousins the Tibetian monks?

Heres my take.
I see the temples as a place of religious eduaction and mastery of bending. As soon as you come of age you can choose celebacy and stay at the temple or Marraige and leave. You're not incline to stay there for life. Since the temples were masscared and ransacked. Aang keeping any celebate vows are kinda of pointless. Since he needs to at one point make more little airbabies to keep the cycle going

We know that Aang's been around the world a few times 100 years ago, so I doubt being an airbending monk has much to do with staying put. Another thing: Is Aang even really a monk? Sure, other people call him a monk, and he calls himself a monk, but could twelve be a bit too young to take any vows or whatever airbenders do? (not that being twelve has preventing Aang from being saddled with responsibilities, but hey) The idea of Aang needing to procreate because of airbending heredity...I don't know, it's almost too practical a solution. Since spirit power is an important force in the Avatar world, wouldn't the spirits find some mystical way to keep the cycle going despite the murder of the airbenders? Oh well. At any rate, airbending heredityis a nice excuse for Aang to pounce on.

Western monks are celibate. Eastern ones aren't always celibate. It's possible that celibacy is not a part of Air Nomad culture. We don't know enough about them to know for sure.

If he'd taken some sort of vow he defininetly would have been looking guilty in the fortune teller and cave of two lovers. Aang's way to moral to break a promise he made to his people.

I agree with Bard Child's description, but I also have a twist.
Male airbenders are from the Northern and Southern Temples. Females are from the Eastern and Western Temples. Maybe they seperated them for a reason. Maybe they raised them without the influence of the opposite sex so it could better their understanding and not influence them to make a rash decision, like run off and not complete their training, etc., etc.. Then, when they become of age (16 in the Avatarverse, I belive), the airbenders had the choice to either become a fully fleged monk, like Gyatso, or to become a regular nomad and start a family. If the nomad family had an airbending child (how you determine so, I do not know), they had the option of giving it to the monks/nuns...and now I'm just rambling on and on.
Lol...now I laugh when I realize, had Aang stayed at the Southern Temple...he woulda been with a bunch of ladies because they were going to send him to the Eastern Air Temple...XD

My thing is, that he trained in the law of his people, his art and craft of bending and the religious teachings as well. Then he is a monk. Doesn't matter what the age. As long as you have been inducted into the brotherhood or sisterhood. You're a Monk/Nun. Maybe, but mentally I don't see Aang staying a bachelor forever. I sure once the war is over he'll stettle down and have a brood of airbabies :3

I've always seen Aang marrying and having a family. He seems to have this need to be loved and have family around and I don't think a solitary life would suit him. Regardless of what Aang might have done a hundred years ago, he is now facing a reality where he might be the last of his people or at least one of a very small number.
I'm just thinking that while Aang might not choose a life without marriage and children, the world might force it on him because he is in essence a semi-deity and people don't like their deities getting married and making babies.
Although Aang would make a great father and a great husband.

Agreed...if Aang chose not to get married because of personal reasons (that of which, I have no clue...just Para's normal ramblings), he would still probably go through with it as the world would demand airbabies! Aw...I bet airbabies are cute...just like FN babies...and WT babies...and...oh dear...I'm getting off topic. Anywa, Aang will most likely get married and have airbabies because he is the last of his kind. Or one of the few that are the last of their kind.
